I bought the cheapest dvd player i could find, $39 cdn. It will play everything from avi to pal format. I just burn as a data disk.
Sometimes certain DVD's can cause problems with the odd dvd player. The fact that it plays on your friends dvd player would make me think it's the player.

Yeah it definitely sounds like its the dvd player. What does the error say? Or does it just not read at all?

Has to be the DVD player ... been having the same problem with my Philips 3040.
I tried updating the firmware but that didn´t help. All original DVDs play perfectly,
but i´ve noticed certain media conflicts when trying to play DVD-Rs. Depends on the
discs u´re using. I´ve tried using 3-4 different makes of DVD-R but get the same
problem. First i though it was my DVD writer acting up, or a burning error ( i use
DVD Decrypter btw) ... but all the dvd-rs i burnt worked perfectly on another
Philips dvd player but older model. My Philips 3040 has now been demoted to an
MP3 player.. :)

I look at the specs. on your DVD/DivX player, but it doesn't shows that the player could play all DivX3, 4 & 5 versions or not!
If you've converted to DVD (VOB files) Format, usually any DVD player should have no problem playing. The only problem is the DVD settings on NTSC (Japan, U.S.), PAL (European) or both formats for your TV. However, there are TVs can handle both NTSC & PAL formats also.
Check your user manuals!

My tele handles both PAL and NTSC ... and i get the same problem using either
PAL or NTSC DVD-R rips ... same difference :) I have no problems at all playing
DivX/XviD AVI-files... works like a charm ! Forgot to mention .. got a cheap Denver
DVD player as well, that has the same problem :( Originals play perfect .. DVD-Rs nope !

Buy xbox, mod it, stream all content on to it and watch it from your tv.
