It's not an abuse of power. It's using their power.
Don't complain about negative rep. You'll just get more.

Its not that abusive, allot of senior members are simply intolerable to short, forgettable posts. Many feel that they are most likely an attempt at increasing post count. If you want to increase your rep its really quite simple, post thought provoking, funny, helpful or simply interesting posts those are what tend to get you positive rep. Here are a few posts that I have made that have garnered me positive rep.

Think of it this way, if your posting something that you wouldn't really pay attention to while reading a thread chances are no one else really cares about it either. I am not saying I don't make stupid meaningless posts, I just never get positive rep for doing so, but since I make them I rarely negative rep others for the same thing. Others however are not so forgiving and will only let it slide once you have proven yourself.

I make stupid, meaningless posts.
But..... I use sharp wit and sarcasm. Sometimes that only takes a few words.
Don't sweat the rep. It can always be rebuilt.

i help ppl out and try to be a good impartial mod
it gets me some good rep too
but making short meaningless posts will net u no respect or just dislike
say something useful. or opinionated (with an argument to back it up) and at least ppl will build a picture of u, good or bad.
at least u wont be a nobody whining that someone neg repped u for being an unimaginative twit
and at least we will all have something good to read

When I saw his rep plummet to -114, I nearly choked. I laughed for about 5 minutes and then felt bad.
But really, it doesn't matter at all... unless you are trying to get to the trading post anyway. As far as the regular forum, most people aren't going to look at your rep score before deciding if your post is valid or not. If it's interesting, or good info, or funny, people will still think so.

Somehow I don't think flipping from -100 or whatever to any amount above zero is going to be all that difficult around here.

i don't really get the whole rep point thing. Apart from allowing you into the trading post does it serve any purpose?? And you only need 10 points to get in there (i think). So everything above that is really pretty pointless.
Correct me if i'm wrong.

Well I would like to do some trading of invites one day. Plus a mod was telling me that he didn't take my post serious because I was -114 and laughed at me. I thought most mods would want people to join there site since forums work better with the more people you have on. Plus i have a lot to offer with in terms of computer knowledge that may help somepeople one day. I just never been on a site that has rep points and I'm a good person that problely takes things to heart to easily.

sammysam, you do realize you had +104 reputation when you made that post, right?
Although I smell the work of someone toying with us here, I think the overall point they were trying to make is that you shouldn't post just for the sake of posting - do it to bring about something positive, even if it's in the slightest. Spamming your way to the minimum twenty isn't exactly contributing to the community.

Sammysam, I would not worry about the situation one way or the the other. I have done professional, free lance fiction writing for some time and I've received numerous letters of rejection( some negative-some positive) on my submissions and on the positive side I've successfully sold work.
The point is, the Plus/Minus reputation points is kind of opinion similar to a editors manuscript rejection/acceptance letter and as such is such subjective and it is important not to allow it worry you needlessly. If you have made statements that you feel-expressed points important to you, then feel proud of your contribution even if an "official" did not agree and "reprimanded" you.
On the other hand, perhaps you made statements which other people responded positively to and while it made you feel good. So try to take such actions with a grain of salt and you may find that it will not worry you so much. If it is any consulation to you, I too think that at times people with a certainly amount of authority misue it and that is true of every web site that a similar Admid/User/Mod hierachy. I have seen negative and completely unnecessary comments directed at newcomers by senior members that should have been "moderated" by an official but was not; however; I did not let it "get to me". It is unlikely that you are the only person who feels or has felt frustration on the issue.
What constitutes "better posts" is strictly subjective. Some people may try to be "objective" and not allow personal biases and opinions to govern how they perceive, react or critique a post or thread and others will not be so restrained. So. personally, I would not let that issue dictate whether or not I express an opinion or make commentary or the lenght of posts.
I hope you find this helpful.

Yeah Kronithus I think that was what the mod thought I was trying to do was try to get my post count up. But on other sites If I posted what i did to get me into this mess other people would of agreed with me and laughed. I now know that this site is not as loose and will be careful what i say.
Thanks StormNinja for the great post. Its has made me feel better. I guess you can't please everyone and for now on will I think as my post on this site as an rejection/acceptance letter that some people will just not like and some will. I do see on some sites the abuse of power in which you speak but i think its even more than just sites since I know some cops that drink and drive and speed all the time and never get in trouble even when they get pulled over. I guess its who you know.
