Here is a short explaination of the Rep points system.
For every 30 number of days, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
For every 20 number of posts, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
For every 100 points of reputation, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
How many posts must a user have before his reputation hits count on others? 20
-----------------------------------------
Mods please spread the word on this and point users to this.
Thanks

The only way to get reputation "points" is if someone with reputation "power" likes what you have written and decides to give you a reputation "point"
Correct me if I'm wrong Jorge and thanks for the Rep info :icon_thum

Yes if someone has reputation power they can appoint you some reputation points. The higher the rep power an individual has the more rep points they can give you.

To be honest, I don't care for it much. When I'm in the forums, I'm already going to look for the latest stuff with the New Posts button. For me, it's a little redundant.

You will be dissapointed. Posting useless messages in the lounge gets people far more rep than helping people with filesharing problems. I don't think anyone pays any attention to it anyway so it dosn't matter.

humm, you are probably right regarding the importance of rep points, but then, why is it still used in the forums if it does not reflect what it should ?
mascott
May 19th, 2007, 08:16 AM
Probably, because it kind of produces a 'fun gauge', in the same vein as the saying 'Mom likes me best'. If you come from a large family, you can remember when your parents were gone; the elder sibling used to exercise their 'asshole authority'. Today, we would call that abuse, but then it was fun - if you were the elder sibling. There are many things that run downhill, so try to enjoy what you can and ignore the rest.

If you look back at your comments, like I did, you'll see that not only did you machine-gun yourself into 21 posts, but the majority of them are worthless. One, I pointed out to you. Another is you commenting in the "So who is still here from the old days?" thread, which you really have no business commenting in since you just joined, or rather, all 3 of your accounts just joined today. You'll see that you only have one account left.
What is considered "nonsense" is you not correcting your mistakes in this community. I wouldn't panic about your current -186 rep count. It can be easily reversed and it is nowhere nearly as bad as the member who achieved a record -1000+.
Just dig in and move on.
johndilan
May 19th, 2007, 04:17 PM
well let me tell you something: the 21 posts for today is me going around in the forum and participating for the first time, trying to have a feel for the subjects discussed here and participating as I can - that you don't like it or find it misplaced is your business, and frankly I find sad that a "super moderator" downplays the participation a member and judges it this way.
Second, regarding the three accounts, there is nothing to "hide" or to be afraid to reveal about it, YES I MADE THREE ACCOUNTS TODAY, and the reason is, whenever your system sends a verification email to activate the account, IT GOES TO THE SPAM FOLDER, ALL OF THEM !! (and I am using gmail, not an obscure, cheap service) So I waited long and nothing came in my inbox (redirected to my main address and therefore does not redirect spam, if you were still finding things strange....)
Now this post is starting to be long and I think it's a shame for a community to doubt and judge its member like this.
I'll wait for your comments before posting anything else. If you find what is happening unfair and correct the rep pts which does not reflect my input in the community, I'll be happy to stay. Should I receive no comments or if you feel that there is still something weird about my inputs, fine, I'll just leave the community, as fast as I joined it.
Don't worry, neither of us will look back to what happened: I frankly don't care now, and you've been here since 2003...

When people don't like a post, it is likely that it will receive negative rep points.
When people agree with a post/like it/find it amusing, it is likely that it will receive positive rep points.
Spamming the boards for WHATEVER reason with non-contributing posts is a sure way to get some negative rep.

I am just going to say... couldn't you have explained this when the system was first introduced (like two years ago)?
It is nice to know (finally) how it works though.
A thread such as this reminds me that I can spread some love (or hate) as the situation warrants. It would be rather unfortunate if negative repping a worthless n00b would make them leave...

Complaining about being negative repped is the best way to decrease your reputation further. Instead of whining, make posts that are meaningful and/or worthwhile.

i actually had an idea for this back when we were all complaining about how stupid rep was. we could have made a game of it. every one who posts in the rep battle thread would be open game. you get to "attack" or "heal" your forum members each day limited by the rules set for dealing out rep. it would have been the next MMO sensation!
.. k maybe not, but what better way to critisize the rep system when no one felt it had place here? im kinda glad we have it now as that was all before the BT trading post.

I've seen it work on sites where the rep comments are made public. It keeps spammy short comments on the rep, and more people are more likely to post it.
Wouldn't work here though. There would be rep wars from too many people posting too many negative rep comments.

I have scanned all the messages but there are so many of them that I may have missed out what I was looking for. Here are my questions. Please would Jorge or someone equally knowledgable supply the answers.
The first is that when 100 reputation points get converted to a single reputation power then do the reputation points get reduced by 100? I don't think so because then the points should never exceed 100 but I want to be sure.
The second is what scaled benefits the possessors of reputation power have?

No. They do not get reduced. You are correct.
The second is what scaled benefits the possessors of reputation power have?
The power to zap someone's rep points into the negative, by a larger number. As far as I know, that's about it...people to be reckoned with. I could be wrong.
Hope this helps.

I still don't.
I mean I get the levels and how you move and what not, but not the execution really.
I tried to rep somebody twice within a few days of each other, and receive a message that I must spread it around a bit first.
So I'm like OK, makes sense, wouldn't want peeps being able to just hammer away at rep in either direction.
So I rep spree a little, mostly ups, till it tells me I used up all my mojo for the day or something. Few days later, the original somebody I wanted to rep made another post that moved me enough at least to go thru the bother of repping, but again I get the "Spread it around a bit, brother" message.
So uh, what was I typing about?
Oh yeah, how does this spread the wealth bit work? Is there a time duration, or so many others I have to rep first, or so many others that must rep before I can again, or what?
And thinking about it, what if only one poster in a while tickles me or pisses me off enough to want to use this awe-inspiring rep power thrust upon me by the fates?
Must a mere mortal such as I visit the mysterious rep to the unsuspecting and the undeserving simply that I may be made able to endow it upon the chosen one?
Just askin', ya know?

I believe it is given at intervals for number of posts and time as a member. Nothing huge, just some small number. The big rep comes from the members who view your posts.

I believe it is given at intervals for number of posts and time as a member. Nothing huge, just some small number. The big rep comes from the members who view your posts.
I see. Hopefully that is the case, as I think my noobness, combined with my lack of useful information (at least new useful information) won't win me many reputation points.

Oh, so Jorge got new advertisements.
I really don't know why this thread is still going. Christ, even my points have dwindled down to 1700ish . . the only people that even DESERVE points are Mels and Pototo & company.
The rest of the posters are bottom feeding leeches that havent contributed a GD thing, or frickin spammers like pamela69.
