View Full Version : Accessing bittorrent via proxy

I used to access bittorrent via proxy since the campus wifi where i stay uses a firewall - "Fortinet".

-The proxy address was given by a friend and using this i could download from bittorrent.
-Currently the proxy is no longer working.
-Hence I searched several proxy lists and tried those proxies but bittorrent does not download anymore.

-->I have noticed this same behaviour with other proxies from proxy lists while the proxy address given by my friend was still working.

Hence, do only certain proxies work with bittorrent? If yes, then what kind of proxy should i search for? (Ex: Do characteristics such as transparent, anonymous or does port number make a difference?)

Note: When running bittorrent i noticed that all connected peers were marked "Local" only. There were no "remote" peers at all. I assume this means that i was connected to peers using DHT network as in client to client direct.

Please do help me out here.

well as i know they ur proxy shoud be a " SOCKS" (its a protocall)
to be able to run P2P.
and IN that proxy u have to have a port open for ur P2P transfers..

and u r client should also support proxy...(like utorrent)

yeah i know what socks is... but get this: I use bitcomet and the proxy setting i use is HTTP1.1 so i dont think i use socks. But thats cos i never really knew bout socks being supported for bittorrent. I think ill try using the socks method now.

However, my problem still is "how to identify if a proxy supports socks?" cos most proxy lists on the net just show an ip address and the port. Is there any site that you could point me to where the socks status of an IP is also mentioned? You could PM me if open posting of sites isnt allowed.

oh and as i mentioned above, i used to use HTTP1.1 protocol in bittorrent for the proxy. But only some proxies work this way. How do i find out which HTTP proxies work with bittorrent and which proxies dont?

well if u use utorrent by giving a HTTP proxy as proxy will make u able to communicate with tracker....

but in order to make out going and incoming P2P connections you have to have open ports on your proxy which should be a SOCKS proxy
