disk defrag problem

I recently tried to defragment my disk and I recieved an error message that there was insufficient space on the disk drive to run the defragmenter. I went through and uninstalled many programs, but the defragmenter still would not run. When i ananlyze the disk it appears to be horribly fragmented as well. Any help is appreciated.

1. Did you use a Reg. Cleaner utility to clean up your Windows' Registry as well?
2. Did you reboot your computer after you cleaned the registry?

Remember to do you defrag. often, and make sure you've at least 15% free space on each HD or it's time to get a new HD or it's time make room for that HD! :)

From the defrag help file:

"A volume must have at least 15% free space for defrag to completely and adequately defragment it. Defrag uses this space as a sorting area for file fragments. If a volume has less than 15% free space, defrag will only partially defragment it. "

I don't think there's any way around this. If you don't have at LEAST 15% (25% would be better) of your hard drive free, you won't be able to defrag.

alot of people use O&O defrag, anyway theres alot of defrag programs that are faster/better than the default windows one

Diskeeper also does a great job.

The 15% is so the defrag app can move files to another area while it defrags, without 15% free space, you'd defrag 10 times before getting a defragged HD.

And yeah..dont ever use the windows default one. It's slow.

Other than being faster, what does diskeeper have over the windows one? I don't like installing a lot of extra programs so I only get them if I really need them.

Its not a large install. Anyway, it has set it and forget it options, to schedule defrags, and has easy options for things like expanding the MFT, gives you advice on your hard drives performance, with reports and such like that. You can schedule boot time defrags to run after a chkdsk too, which saves some time.

Anyway, its not a necessity, but i make it a point to install it on all my systems and run weekly/biweekly. The speed gains are noticeable enough for it to pay off.

Diskeeper and O&O and are nice, but I'm a fan of PerfectDisk, this may be seen as spam, but I'm just trying to make sure people are aware of other alternatives.

But I agree, anything is better than the Windows default defrag program.

yes i agree that the windows program does suck, i personally use perfectdisk as well but diskeeper works great too, havent tried the other one though...

I use diskeeper since it allows you to defrag all the drives with out having to click on each hard drive plus its faster. You may also want to run cleanup look it up on google it the first link that will help clear up some space plus its free.
