So i'm going to try to prove to her its worth it! So tell me how long does it take for you to download a Average song.

i have cable and for an average 5-7 min. song it takes about 10 to 20 seconds....
i just downloaded the star wars aotc and it took about and hour for two 700mb files,
i think though that speeds also depend on who you're downloadin from.

I have cable and download full length movies in hours, shows in an hour, and a song in about one minute, usualy less. Another factor is how many people you are downloading from (p2p progs).

fast.......GTA, who is your ISP? If its MSN or AOL tell your mom that they sell personal info and track your surfing habits (and sell them)
even if they don't she'll belive you, its the *big bad corporation* thing people belive in so much

If i get a decent connection or just download from a high quality server, i get about 100k a sec
for popular songs i can usually get them in about 30 sec or less
also mention that broadband leaves an open phone line

I have 3mb(down) 500k-1.5mb(up) ADSL.
It takes 1 FULL ALBUM to be downloaded in 10 mins.
1 DVD RIP takes about 1hr.
2 Part Can Rip takes 30 mins.
But ofcourse it depends where you are, who your ISP is and who you download from.
But tell your mom, that it's totally worth it, she can make calls while you download. And that you can spend less time at the computer because everything is so much faster!
(that kinda helped me get my ADSL, but mostly because it's cheaper to get ADSL where i am)

I'm on DSL (512k down, 128k up) and it takes me a couple of minutes to download a typical mp3, assuming a good connection. I'm old enough to remember the bad old days, my first modem was 300 baud, advertised as "high speed" because it was faster than 110 baud :P

I'm LAN connected on our local resnet. DL speeds vary wildly. It can trickle along at 0.50-1 kbs, or it can rip along at 200+ (best I've seen yet was 262kbs -- from one source, yet). 10-40 seems to be my usual range.

I am extremely ashamed to say that I can get a maximum of 33.6kbps only because of where I live which is in the middle of a farmer's field. Welcome to my hell. I suppose I could get Expressvu(sattelite internet) but I'm not because I'm poor. I really look forward to the day when I move to downtown toronto for university and broadband is 15$ a month. Because that's the only time I'll get it .

I'm at Adsl and my maximum so far was 116kbyte/s. I have an average of about 40. I regularly get 80 or more, but sometimes I'm downloading from 56k users at 0.06kbyte/s... That sucks dude!

Ok. Currently, I have 56k, but my parents make the final decision on whether we jump to cable or not. If or when we do, I will be able to pull in 768 Kpbs downstream & 384 Kpbs upstream. I think that averages to about 96Kpbs when I am downloading. In the mean time....my dad has a T1 @ work....I think I might go "chill" @ his work some day.....

ok...convincing mom through simple economics is the goal.
Currently she pays about 15 to 20 dollars for a seperate phone line for the dialup connection.
She probably is on AholeL or Earthlik ...another 15.00 to 29.00 a month.
Do some homework...call your phone company... see what their rate is for basic unlimited DSL.
DSL is 49.95/mo in my area and seems to be about the going rate most places.
DSL will work with just one phone line, and (was pointed out above) that calls/faxes/answering machines/ can be made on the same line at the same time.
One line, One bill...about the same price as she is paying now...faster internet access.
Of course... lose the AholeL/earthlik...tell her you no longer need training wheels or want to be profiled anymore.... that should do it.
...oh by the way...you might want to pitch in a few bucks from your allowance to sweeten the deal, or volunteer to do an extra chore around the house too....LOL

broadband is very worthwhile.
consider that with broadband you can watch streaming movies, or download movies for free... tell her to think about not paying $5 a month to get just 1 movie from blockbuster...
then think about the fact that you already pay at least $10 a month for dialup, but more likely closer to $20. when we did the math, broadband was only $10 more a month...
we paid:
$15 a month for internet
$5 a month for call forwarding
$5 a month for unlimited local calls
and $5 a month for a service that picked up calls while we were online
it's really not that expensive for all you get, and around here, it's 3mbps for $43 a month.

I'm feelin' all ya 56k'ers. I started off with adsl about 2 years ago (Kbps in/out 1000/384, took me about 50 secs for a song if it went at max. speed) , but 4 month ago i dropped back to a 56k modem, cause i moved back to my home country. Now i don't even really bother downloading stuff, unless its somthin I really really want or need! But i'm hangin' in there. Only thing thats keepin me alive is the fact that I'm gettin cabel (Kbps in/out 600/128) in 1 month!!! Mwahhh...ain't as good as my old adsl, but its enough to stop me from falling asleep while watching a mp3 download or playing online games!!!
Good luck wit' convincing u'r mom. Just don't stop nagging and eventually she'll give in!!!

Cable is the only way to go, 1300 to 1500 kb/s down and 300 to 500 kb/s up consistantly since 99'. I can't even remember how slow dial up was.
Tell your Mom you'll kick in the increase in the bill and make some sacrifices elsewhere in your life. It will be soooooo worth it. Good Luck.

u think ur situation is bad, mine is worse
we have one telephone provider down here for the whole country, with a monopoly procted by the govenment although officially it end in 2001.
newayz most users in my country are 56k users because of the ridiculous prices put on broadband.
not tht the 56k prices arent ridiculous. who the fark charges normal telephone rates for internet acces it's ludacris.
512k d/l 256k u/l is very expensive if i'm correct abt
the equivalance of $200. or did i mention it has a 3 gb cap. ADSL users say they reach tht cap in abt 18 hours.

What i noticed is that once more providers enter an area, Comcast used to be 55 bucks where I live no lie, but now it's down to about 45 and 35 if you bought the modem b/c they have Verizon and Qwest as competition.
I like Verizon a lot... Their all about you the user

Cocks Cable.. Low end I get about 25k per second downloads on kazaa, and I have seen it reach 335k on the high side. Depends on what Im getting and who from. Uploads are capped, so I wont bother. Emule averages around 100k+ TOTAL speed. I have seen it reach 300 total, now and then.
Also tell your parents that it is easier to get hacked through the phone line.. download Zone Alarm.. and show her all of the attempted attacks... If youre lucky she will freak out.

Ugh.....thats cool for you and all but to some others thats in tandem with Hacking....$hit I guess it actually is just that. Anyways if YOU dont like ppl tapping your phone or hacking into your home setup why do it to others, thats just lame. I share and am a believer of the free exchange of information
Not the freeloading of other portals and sources. So sorry but I think that ppl
who do wardriving and shite are still nothing more than leechers of a diffrent sort but all towards the same objective. I know that if I had knowledge of some freeloading ass riding my wi-fi i'd be honestly prompted to kick his ass.
(something that would be difficult as I AM wise to Wep encryption in general and have taken steps to secure my wireless network)
THOUGH on a completely diffrent side of the coin not enabling or setting up any security features for your wireless hub is a recipe for disaster and invites people to try and get the "free ride". With new encryption standards on the way for wi-fi
this type of stuff will get more difficult

I have ADSL 1024/128kb/s(dn/up) and the fastest I could get was getting around 120kB/s but my upload sucks. I wished I had more download and upload but we have only one ISP in Cyprus and offers the home package 1024/128 at 35 pounds. Hopefully there will be more ISP in the future to give more competition in the market and buy better packages at lower prices.

You can tweak your Com Port to help increase your speed.Within your "Device Manager," which you can access by right clicking on the "My Computer" icon. Once there, scroll through the list and double-click on the "Ports branch." Now, double-click your communications port to which your external modem is attached and select the "Port Settings" tab to access its settings. Normally, your computer will have a setting of 9600 Bps, which is the default value setting. This setting is fairly slow and does cause bottlenecks to occur. By increasing it to 115200, you will help to increase your speed. Note., you should leave the default values for the Data Bits, Parity, and Stop bits settings as they are. These values represent standard settings and should meet your needs.

hey dude
Dude I am so with you. I know how you feel, my mom was like that when I was back home. But just be thankful that your getting download speeds. I am in a dorm and the college blocked all p2p ports so I can use crap.
If you want I know this might suck but go with Netzero, eathlink or AOL. They have the 5X faster dial up speed for modems and some of them are added in like AOL. If you do then go with shareaza and configure the download speed and upload speed. Like 157 mb for download and 28 k for upload. You wont get that kinda of speed but it will push the dial up to its limit and sometimes you will be getting 50 k downloads and they do bounce around so you might reach 100 k for a few secs. I did that on my dial up and got pretty good decent speeds. I advice that you really use it for music and files less then 30 mbs. Dont try to download for software or movies because you will be online for a while. Best of luck dude

Tell her that it is definately a cheaper deal to get a bundled pkg w/ the cable...you get both for one price(usually 30-40 a mo) <~~~ thats a basic bundle.
Rather than paying for Phone,Cable,Dialup and then the phones always tied up and you have to get off to take calls etc (I know everytime I dialup it's 5 cent ) so there youd be saving money also. :)
I hope this helps....if not then I suggest getting a job to maybe help her out :D

Typical downloads off the internet are usually 250-350kbps.
A Popular file on Kazaa will Download at 180-220+ KBPS

Rare files can be as slow as 56k.

I currently have satellite internet by Starband.com and I go with the $49.99/month plan. The recently came out with a $39.99 plan ealier this year. I got it in March of 03'. I paid a good chunk of money to get the satellite along with the cheaper bill. With installation and everything it came to like $1,200, but it's okay because I love it and I'm out in the country and there's nothing else I can get.
I usually get 100kb/sec. And when I download music off of websites such as espew.com it only takes a minute in a half or less.
You are suppose to have a clear view of the sky, but since I'm in the country I have lots of trees in the way. You are suppose to get up to 800KB/sec, which I do believe you can get because once in a while I see it top 1MB/sec which is hardly ever, but it has happened very quickly before.
Beats the old 56k I had which would only download at 3KB/sec. Anything above 56k is better I think.
