I used WinMX 2.6 for a long time with no problems. I downloaded WinMX 3.1 and can't get anywhere! Since their online help is not activated yet, I'm coming here for basic help!

My main problem is that I get no search results, and I have searched for artists/titles that I had lots of results with the previous version. I have seen something about adding additional servers; I haven't done that, and am not sure how to do it and from where!

I imagine somehow my settings are not correct yet, but I'm not sure what to check. Any help on where to start would be greatly appreciated! Since this is probably basic info., I would be glad to use email instead of this forum if necessary.

Thanks for any help!!

For additional open nap servers dl Napmx at the link below:
http://napmx.darkservers.net/

as for searching there are still a lot ppl that have not switched over which might explain low search numbers. Also sometimes WPN servers can be down.

I had the same problem, But What happen to me was that when I connected to WinMx 2.6, it automatically asked me to upgrade to 3.1, so I did. I found out that it would be better to uninstall WinMx 2.6 first and start out in a fresh directory with WinMx 3.1. now it works great for me.. See if thats the problem.

It might be you need to configure your firewall. Have you allowed zonealarm to let winmix access it's ports?
One difference between the new version and older is that is uses different ports now. It is a completely different network to the older version.

My new one uses the same port as the old one. It listens on TCP port 6699, and that is the critical one which must be mapped.

5.1. How Do I Use WinMX with My Firewall?
It depends on what firewall you are using. With something like ZoneAlarm you just allow WinMX to access the internet, and act as a server, and it will work fine. Otherwise, you have two options:

Option 1

You can map an incoming TCP/IP port to the machine running WinMX.

If you are using a home router or software router (such as ZoneAlarm) this is a very simple procedure, which will be outlined in the documentation that came with your firewall or router. If you are behind a corporate firewall or proxy, you will need to ask your network administrator to do this for you. Some network administrators may not want to do this, in which case you should use Option 2 below. In either case, you will need to know the port number to map. This can be found by going into the WinMX connection settings, and clicking the "Network / Proxy Settings" button. The port number you need to map will appear below where it says "Incoming Connections".

Option 2

You can put WinMX into "Firewall Mode".

This mode doesn't need to have any incoming connections, but will reduce search results because you will be unable to download from other users that are in the same mode (as neither side will be able to accept a connection). Uploads will be pushed outward when in firewalled mode instead of waiting for an incoming connection. To put WinMX into firewall mode, go into the "Connection Settings" click the "Network / Proxy Settings" button, and below where it says "Incoming Connections", select "Unable to accept incoming connections".

I'm in!! Changed to secondary connection, and all is well!!

However, I do have one other question. Is there a way to limit the number of results in WinMX 3.1? For example, if I check for "Anne Murray", I get hundreds of results. Can I limit this?

Funny, huh? At first, I couldn't get ANY results...now I get too many!! Go figure. :)

Thanks
Judy

just click stop on search page when you get search results.
