ok when i first got the internet all my downloading was from http then i discovered kazaa then bit torrents

now someone got me to try usenext and i really like it i decided before i go from trial to there paid service i would see if there were similier programms that are more compatitively priced and i found you guys here

before i ask questions this is what i have discovered from my search of your forum and good old google but im not sure im reading the information right

1) i need a newsgroup access portal im in the uk but giganews seemed to be recommended by one site (i understand i have to pay for access that dont bother me so long as its unlimited)

2) i then need a news leecher client i believe the one called newsleecher seems the best (from what i read its not as complicated as the usenet explorer but better then grabit)

3) paid newsgroup subscriptions have better retention (ie the files stay there longer)

ok thats what i have gathered so far now my questions

if i sign up to the above newsgroup provider and buy newsleecher is it going to be better then usenext? ie truely no limit at top speed? better or similier retention?

is the newsgroup subscriber i mentioned truly the recommended one?

will i find the same content using the subscriber and reader as i can on usenext (to me it looks like they just provide the reader and the subscription in one only with a limit on how much u can get at high speeds and higher rates)

any sugestions and advice welcomed if you know a good subscriber service for news groups im happy to use you as a referer it must be unlimited access though i get through 200gb plus a month oh and good access speeds from the uk would be nice

any uk users here that are on a newsgroup subscriber and using a leecher please share with me what service your using and reader and how much it is costing

thank you in advance

ok as well as checking here i have been doing further googling and browsing

now with usenext you type what you want in search and up it comes (if it is there) and you right click and choose download all)

from what i can gather from screenies of newsleecher you have to subscrib to a seperate search engine

or

there apears to be some free web based ones but doing a search on them seems to reveal nothing (maybe as im not subscribed to news groups yet?)

this is all very confusing if some one could advise me (preferably in newb friendly terms)

all i want at the end of the day is a programme like usenext that will allow me to use a subscribed newsgroup server (that has unlimited download very good retention and full bandwith) ok perhaps im asking too much?

any help would be apreciated

*******edit 2******

ok i think i have sussed searching out

u sign up to newzbin website search for what you want there note the newsgroup name load up your reader select that newsgroup and look for the release in it

is that right? man i wish someone would advise me on this, the more i read the more i cant figure out arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

It pretty much answers all your questions and then gives you a STEP BY STEP on how to use newsgroups.

LOL! Slower than Bit Torrent? I don't think so! Not unless you have a REAL crappy news server!

Anyway,I use Giganews. It IS more expensive, but I like the service and speeds I get.

I also use Newsleecher version 3.9 beta 1 right now as my newsreader client...and I have paid for it and have 1 year of super search on it.

I also have a paid account at newzbin. But there are free NZB sites also.I just find that newzbin indexes them better.

For a beginner, you may want to check out Grabbit...it is a newsreader client, but very simple to use and easy to get NZB files. (The NZB files are like torrents...when you have your newsreader client set up with the proper information, you can simply click on an NZB file and it will automatically bring up your client and start doiwnloading the file immediately.)

Also Newshosting and usenext service is about 15 bucks a month for unlimited service...a little cheaper than Giganews at 25 bucks a month...still Giganews strive to be leader when it comes to the longest retention (or how long a file stays on a news server) They are up to 100 days, but since usenext has raised theirs to 101 days....I am looking for Giganews to raise theirs again soon.It is a tit for tat struggle with retention o newsgroups...which is great news for the consumer...as he is the one that benefits from this "retention war" going on between newsgroup providers.

Actually all three are decent newsservers.....Giganews, newshosting and usenext. There are others also. But I do not have any experience with them.I DID switch to Giganews from newshosting, because I was having trouble with their service. But after countless arguments on this, I found out that a lot of times, it depends on where you live. In my area in IL. I did not find newshosting to be worthy of my 15 bucks a month at all...they were offline a LOT. So I switched to Giganews and have not looked back. NEVER had a bad day since.

But the choice is up to you. I have never used usenext so I cannot say how bad or good they are. But I DID have problems where I lived when I had newshosting....but a lot of other people claim they have had absolutely no trouble at all using that service!

It really comes down to what is best for you. I would look into all of the available services I could before making a choice and then do the same with a decent newsreader. You cannot go wrong with Giganews and newsleecher, but they ARE a little more expensive. You can use newsleecher absolutely free...but if you want the supersearch feature turned on, you have to pay for it, because they do it by their servers.

What you could do, is download newsleecher free from their site www.newsleecher.com and then try out giganews for three days free (they have a free three day trial period) at www.giganews.com and then decide if you like it or not.

If you do not, you have lost nothing! You can also try out other news servers that have free trials and see how they compare. A lot of times, services differ depending on where you live and how you set up your newsreader.

For example,I used to use 10 out of the 20 connections that were available on Giganews and then I upped it to 20 one day just for laughs....and I found out that where I WAS getting about 450kb/s downloading speeds ...when I upped my connections to 20 I now get 650 kb/s downloading speeds!

And NO my ISP did NOT up my connection speed! So it varies from user to user....but you WILL get great speeds and probably get hooked like I did no matter WHO you go with...newsgroups are GREAT...I simply do not use torrents anymore...they are just not fast enough and I HATE uploading something back. It takes way too much time for me on just one file. If I DO get an ocassional torrent it is from a private site....as public torrent sites are REALLY slow for me.

Good luck with your choices! If you have any questions once you get started we will be here, just ask away!

ok i took the plunge and signed up to giganews and downloaded there recommanded client "newbin for giga news" its search thing seems to only find single files and if you browse a group instead of seeing the rar files you see loads of posts and spam :(

so i did some searching and found a freeware one that dont work but does have several search engines that can export the resualt to nzb file that news leecher read (this is all very complicated) news leecher then downloads

now usenext maybe limited to 50gig but its software is amazing there has to be out there software like that for normal usenet servers?

ok im now using newsleecher and gaining experince lol

say i look at a group and i see in the postings a file i want thats split (we`ll go this file "demo gt" though knowing the filenames i have seen it would morelikely be dg34$% etc etc)

now i see in the list
demo gt.001
demo gt.002
demo gt.003
demo gt.004
etc etc
normaly with yenc listed after there name

now i know i could click each one in turn and right click yatter yatter but is there a way to select one and have newsleecher download the whole lot (preferably telling me if its got some missing)?

sorry to be a pain

Files like this:

demo gt.001
demo gt.002
demo gt.003
demo gt.004

Need to be joined is all.

Most people use HJJoin, or HJSplit:

Personally I like Simple File Joiner:

Simple File Joiner is freeware Simple File Joiner Pro costs.
