its sounds like you have a combination dvd-burner/cd-writer which has lost the ability to read cd's. This is a common problem with combination dvd/cd burners. your only solution is to purchase a new dvd-burner/cd-writer combination drive.
I recommend Lightscribe for $59.95 from office max..some folks swear by Plextor (i think that's what its called available at Best Buy I believe) and no there is no other way to fix this.

yet all the videos and cds i made before this problem will play fine.if my dvd player had lost the ability to read cds and vcd's,wouldnit it also not play my vcd's and cd's that were made before this problem occured?also i have another question.a dvd disc can still make vcds wouldn't it?sorry for the stupid questions,i'm just fairly new to this and am frustrated by this new problem/

let me try to phrase it in this way,say you or anybody else downloaded an asvcdfile, but you cant play it becuase do i code themaking a dvd video o svcd are not supported by the dvd player you have is an older model and won't play them.how, with, nero do i encode and burn to vcd,or avi, svcd that can be played on my stand-alone dvd player?do i choose the create dvd video option on nero express?

in simple terms, can i create a vcd or svcd video with dvd-r discs?i dont want to make dvds out of them, because nero's encoding from avi or mpg to dvd eats up all my disc space.(i only have a 30 gig hard drive.)and since the dvd plaayer attachted to me tv will only play vcd or dvd files, thats why im trying to find out if you can make vcd or svcds with nero with dvd-r disks because i want to watch them on my television

For VCD, SVCD you need to burn to CD-R disks not DVD-R. I know DVD-R disk has lots more room than CD-R but the file systems for them are different. Don't use Data Disk format for VCD or DVD videos, blank CD-R disks are very cheap these days!

okay then this is the problem. you will need to use cd-r media not dvd media and not cd-rw which stands for cd re-writeable. just buy some cd-r's and it should be fine...make sure to use CD mode in nero....it's not possible to make a vcd the way you were trying to do it using dvd mode with dvd-r media.
edit: one more question for you and without getting too technical...do you have a standalone dvd player that is attached to your television set or are you using video out from a graphics card on your computer to watch these on your tv?
I can understand you wanting to make smaller file sizes so that you can fit a lot of video files on a single dvd disc....I think newer standalone dvd players (dvd players not a part of your computer) can play mpg and avi files.
The method you were doing will let you put one movie on 1 'cd' specifically CD-R (cd recordable) sounds like you want to put a lot of files on one dvd...and it also sounds like you downloaded something called svcd from either p2p or elsewhere.
what format are these svcd's in? are the mpg's? try burning it as just a data dvd and see if your standalone will play it...if it supports mpg and avi file formats it should show you the name of the file with its extension on screen and give you the option to select the file and press enter..if it plays then you are golden..no need to go through the trouble of converted to an actual svcd with nero.
apologies if any of this is hard to follow..let's just take things slowly one step and at a time and figure out exactly what it is you have and what you want to do with it.
It might also help to know what type of standalone dvd player you have so that someone can look up the specifications for it on the internet using google to find out what file formats it supports, meaning whether or not it can play avi and mpg files without having to convert them to either vcd, svcd or dvd format.

That is to complicated, what I did was this, I bought a xvid dvd player on Ebay, and only burn xvid, dvix and since then is great, and burn with deepburner, I hate nero.
