I am using an old pentium computer as a media gateway. I cant stream media but it uses low power. I just found out my desktop uses approximately 145W of electricity which compared to my old computer, uses around 40W, is a power hogging hairdryer (its very loud). I thought of getting an old laptop off ebay to use as a server but its in my opinion better to build a desktop using a mobile motherboard and cpu. It will use as much power as a laptop but is more cost effective in the longrun especially if parts go bad like the power supply or hard drives.

Your desktop uses 145w? Your very lucky. My current setup with only one graphics card uses about 525w.

I use my toshiba satellite M class laptop 24/7 for torrenting, it's my only working comp. I've had it for 2 years and it's still going strong though not as fast as it used to be. I prop it with books on each side, set up a little fan behind, and let it blow cool air underneath the computer. Keeps it cool, does a very good job. I can also take it to wireless cafes to upload/download, where they have business connections - works especially well at night when there are fewer people! :)
If you're going to go with a laptop to download all the time, you need to either get a cooling pad for it or do something like me so that the cpu doesn't heat up too much. Also, you need to unplug the power and let it run on the battery every so often or the battery will become weak and not last long on it's own.

My laptop runs mepis at the moment. I think I am going to stick with it :D But just curious, What is this about 24/7 downloading? I don't get what you guys mean... I should know what the hell you guys are talking about. but unfortunately I don't. doesn't your laptop burn up?

Well, like I said, mine doesn't because I have a small fan set up behind the laptop, books on each side propping it up, and cool air blows directly underneath the computer.

One simple tip. Keep the lid open and create a new power profile with a screen shut-off set at 1 minute. Choose this profile when you intend to "close" the lid. Same power savings and better cooling.

don't use it too much
specs:
p4 2.8ghz
win xp pro
512 mb ram
my laptop used to not overheat at all
now it overheats all the time, like just converting flac to lame will overheat it
my advise is use an old laptop cause it will most definitely ruin your laptop. also turn off the led lights to the power and other stuff. also shut off the screen a lot. don't run a lot of programs while using it. i also have cd cases propping it up so that cool air can run under it.

I did with my last laptop and the hard drive KO'd....
I did with my current laptop and the hard drive is about to KO'd - new one eBayed ;-)
They are good for it obviously because of the portability advantages and wireless but if you are leaving it to be sit anywhere, make sure it's nice and cool... mine has a tendancy to shut down after it passes a certain temp.

i've kept one of my laptops on 24/7 for quite some time now without any external cooling device and it's been fine. i occasionally turn it on to cool once in a while in the summer because of the summer heat; but other than that it has been working great. i also don't run memory extensive program though (i use utorrent alot)

I use my desktop for torrents but 1 sometimes 2 of my 3 Thinkpads always stay on. I have had to replace the LCD on one of them. :icon_thum
