It's a type of codec. That's the simplest way I know it. You need to download the proper codec to play movies encoded in xvid.

Google would have easily helped you, had you looked. http://www.xvid.org/

Also, I recommend getting a codec pack like klite instead if you don't already have a bunch of codecs installed. It will make sure you can play virtually every movie you come across.

I agree, once you have that codec you can pretty much play everything you will download.

Second one is your best bet since you seem to be new at this.

You may want to dowmload VLC video player and you will be able to see any XVID movie on your computer, but you need WINRAR to decompress the movies.
To burn the movies Deep burner is great software to do so.
You need a dvd player that plays XVID on your tv, a regular dvd player won't recognize the format.

I prefer Nic's Build myself: http://nic.dnsalias.com/xvid.html

Once the Codec is installed, almost any Player will play the videos..no need to download anything special.

K-Lite is the best, but i would prefer K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. Just to be sure you can play anything you want ;)...
