Bittorrent tracker PirateBay.org, currently based in Sweden, plans to purchase the man-made island-country, Sealand, off the coast of the UK. Sealand is its own country, and the PirateBay would not be subject to the jurisdiction of any nations if it relocated to the island. TPB is seaking donations to help go through with this plan. Just in time too, canada is about to pass a law even worse then the one currently in place in the US. They want to make it illegal to record any form of programming, make it criminal to share music online as well as prevent the circumvention of drm. It appears that no country is immune from having their politicians bought out. Cant wait to see one created from the idea. Long live Pirate Bay.

How about buy some food for some starving people. I think the geeks have lost all perspective of whats really important in life. I like P2P and all but good grief! Its only free movies, music and software. If this much effort could be put forth to solve real world problems I would have a sliver of hope for humanity.

I just got a reply from one of Sealand's ministers to an e-mail I sent earlier...
FROM: burint@sealandgov.org
Many thanks for your e-mail to us here in the Principality.
The initiative by piratebay has nothing to do with the Principality, is unrelated to any applications for inward investment which we are currently considering, and should not be considered in any way related to our State or our recent call for inward investment applications.
We attach a copy of our World FactBook submission which we hope will be informative and permit most of your article to be written; any specific queries you might have we should be pleased to address.

You should become the ZP Investigative Journalist and War Corespondent.
Bring with you some hot asian chick in a mini skirt and travel around tackling the tough P2P issues, with interviews including EFF, senators, Skype, Apple Marketing Executives, DRM competitors and a whole cast of RIAA and MPAA execs.
It would be a lot like every other day at ZP but live.

But it does mean allot more then just movies, music etc... It is finally showing that people are not going to be push overs to corporations that think they can buy anything they want including rights that should never be afforded to them. This is the first step in preventing the controlling of the internet.

They want control over their own content and the right to make money off their own works. While I do not agree with the tactics of the AAs, to me its not that big a deal. If the free ride ended tomorrow I wouldnt blink an eye. I would fire up SOF and frag some people. Why do people feel they are being pushed around? People are so full of shit. We all like not having to pay for anything. Bottom line. Don't make lame excuses for wanting free shit. Look at this another way: You would like to take away certain peoples rights so that you do not have to work and buy entertaining products. Being entertained is cool and the gang but in the grand scope of the worlds problems it seems pathetic and insignificant.
Im venting a bit here, sorry for that, but god damn! The world is on the hellbound express and everyones worried if they have cable TV down there. I hear its hot, bring a fan and I'll meet ya by the snack bar.

Sealand was an oil platform. If they did buy sealand, bush would cut it's cables or icbm it with conventional weapons. Oligarcy and corporations do not want any competition. It is about chaining minds to corporate logos and worship of commercial idols like gods. ie, mickey mouse or angela jolie.

It's a ridiculous publicity stunt.
The sellers want a minimum $120 million, where are TPB going to get that kind of money ?
Even if they could, there would still be immense logistical and legal issues to iron out before they could start serving torrents from there.
A completely ludicrous idea.

I totally agree......whats retarded too is that the price is $65 million EURO.......65 mill for a lame "island" in the middle of a freezing-cold ocean...
If they were smart theyd buy that island that Brando used to own, is like 10 mill at the most with warm waters, awesome scuba-diving, the works,....

I agree that they should have the right to control their content, but they are going beyond just wanting to control their content. They are trying to change a market to exploit the consumer. Forcing you to one operating system over another, locking you to a specific music player, locking out features if you don't have the newest hardware (hdmi issue). I realize you don't need digital media to live, but if they are going to afford legal rights to an industry their should be some consumer protection behind it. The music and movie industrie should be forced to come up with a standard drm if they want the right to prosecute you for hacking drm. The drm should not contain spyware or damage you machine in any way. Any company should have the right to make their device compatible with the drm so long as they are willing to keep the system secure. If the industry decides to change the drm standard you should be able to transfer your collection to the new system. If that was done you would have the same allowances you do now only they would have control of their content.

Its only free movies, music and software. If this much effort could be put forth to solve real world problems I would have a sliver of hope for humanity.
given the geometric progression of technological advancement, in another 30 to 50 years most of the worlds problems regarding poverty and starvation wud be eradicated. the only people starving or in discomfort then would be people living under the tyranny of corporate houses, software giants,riaa/mpaa which won't cease to exist until the end of the universe. as mountain dude put it these corporate houses will cater to different section of the society providing the same content but varying the quality of product with hardware i.e. money and ultimately making manifold profits by selling both .the only relief to the consumers then will be, if they were able to procure software for free. although i don't see bittorrent protocol living "INDEPENDENTLY" past the next 5 to 10 years as will be the fate of most other file sharing networks, but this move by pirate bay, if remotely accomplished against all odds, "MAY" ensure that file sharing will survive.
on a lighter note, i wonder what'll happen to zeropaid lol, i'm quite sure given it's popularity and rate of growth, in the near future some big corporate company will offer jorge tens of millions of dollars ( please don't mind if i estimated a lower value). perhaps then we'll have to point our browsers to www.zeropaid.microsoft.com, or maybe they'll let zeropaid keep it's own domain name. among other things am pretty sureEDIT "krell dude" will ravage jessica alba's body like a dog on crack, mfgdpooter dude will have the "ANAL WART" issue solved, sp00ky will trade the invite to the moon for cupcakes with me, soulxtc dude will have the latest special forces weaponry system to play with and mel dude will "BUY" each mp3,software,etc that he wants aaanndd he'll have his cock sucked for a bt invite.

Negotiations Has Started (http://buysealand.com/?p=6)
January 15th, 2007 | Category: Uncategorized (http://buysealand.com/?cat=1)
The Government of Sealand has initiated negotiation. Tomorrow, the ACFI and Government of Sealand will sit down in the SMTP chambers of the Internets to discuss the future of the micronation.
— We welcome the request and hopefully we can settle on a price. But knowing how hard non-kopimistic people can be to negotiate with, we will go with Plan B if they’re not willing to meet our demands, press officer of ACFI says.
As more news comes along, we will update the blog.

Forget about buying an island. TPB should make movies, games, and music that we can download for free. They should produce hundreds of movies and thousands of games and albums like the AA's at a cost of $10 billion /year and not charge anything. Money sux, free is l33t! And all you people who are going to school should get a job that doesn't pay ANYTHING after you graduate. :icon_rr:

I could see them doing that, it would isolate them from any and all countries laws. They could make their own and not have to worry about any problems directly or indirectly.

ACFI is a group of people working for the peoples right to it’s Internets. We have made progress in Ladonia (http://ladonia.net/) and are now working on the Micronation of Sealand (http://www.sealandgov.com/).
Recently it was made clear that this country is for sale. To make sure the owners will be kopimistic and that the country won’t be governed by people that do not care about it’s future, we have come up with a plan.
With the help of all the kopimists on Internets, we want to buy Sealand. Donate money and you will become a citizien.
We’ve set up a forum (http://forum.buysealand.com/) to discuss how the country is supposed to function.
— It should be a great place for everybody. With high-speed Internets access, no copyright laws and vip accounts to The Pirate Bay (http://thepiratebay.org/), press officer of ACFI says.

Plan B: If we do not get enough money required to buy the micronation of Sealand, we will try to buy another small island somwhere and claim it as our own country (prices start from USD 50 000).
