any ideas on good programs to do a friend-2-friend network that is secure? Any advice would be great because we are pretty dumb about all this. Thanks

http://www.qnext.com/ comes to mind. I tried it when it first came out. It was cool and it WAS free! I don't know about now. You can try it for yourself.

Hamachi is the only one that mentions encryption, with higher bit than WASTE.

You could try Dargens.

You don't need to log in just go to website ( http://www.itsdargens.com/ ) and create a swarm.

Select private (radio button) in the swarm create form.

It will then create a swarm page.

Make a copy and paste this address and email it to your friends.

To launch the client go to swarm page and click the start link.

This will launch an open source java application called ANts p2p.

You will only connect to your friends.

Have a go or try the alpha test ( http://kerjodando.blogspot.com/2007/01/dargens-f2f-p2p-social-network-file.html ).

Feed back would be appreciated.

its not even that. its a Virtual private network program. basically, anyone you know running it can be on a "LAN" with all the normal benefits of a lan. ive been using it for file transfering and even gaming. for some games its a great workaround for internet play. you know how some games dont care if their CD keys work over a lan, but if you do internet play it talks to a server? well hamachi fixes that.

I second that. As long as youre using it with friends.

Wow thanks for all the info! We had looked at waste but it might be a little complex for a few of the people and i hate being a tech guy for people on a phone. Freenet looked like you had to have three people on to work so that didnt seem to good. now i got a few more to look into

WASTE (http://waste.sf.net) is a classic, but good application for that use.

But there are also new programs like Retroshare (http://retroshare.sourceforge.net/) that look promising.

HFS is very good to keep it simple and to start off without difficulties.
However the transfers always go through your computer, you are the server.
And it's not really a F2F network, it's a hosting solution for that use.

Try Dargens now improved and easier than HFS.

You can create your own private network just by sharing URLs or join a large network and still download privately.

Their site says:

Privately D/L Free MP3's, Anonymous p2p file sharing network .Ideal for university. Easy & fast.
www.dargens.com

Try this swarm (a bootstrap on to the network) http://www.dargens.com/swarm/show_one/61e1fe903b40888bf27031b8afcc3e46

Like a private tracker but you contol who you connect to so no need to trade invites.

Still beta, open source see code http://code.google.com/p/kerjodando/ .

A friend to friend network where you can download from everyone not just your friends.

Couple of draw backs (1) Uses Java (but does not seem to work for Macs or Linux and (2) It is for sharing non-copywright user created content e.g. new unsigned bands.

Go get your old beat up computer, buy a 1TB HDD and a Ethernet card. Plug your monitor and keyboard into it from your other computer and install a VPN program, then install an FTP server, plug it into your router move the monitor and keyboard back to your main computer and log into the "server" with the VPN, finish setting the FTP up and leave the box on forever. Give the FTP ip to your friends and a password, and begin the fun...thats what I do, just purchased the second 1TB HDD, should be getting here in the next day or so. Me and about 6 friends put all of our music and movies on there as we get them.

hamachi is nice for the encryption layer - and for being able to isolate yourself from the "internet" via the lan style addressing scheme that they use... however you still need a transfer mechanism unless you plan on simply opening up MS file sharing for people.

obviously you could simply use FTP - but i've been toying around with using something like Haxial KDX (www.haxial.com) which is sort of a modern day "bbs" program with file areas, and message boards as well as private/public chat. It also includes its own encryption, so you could even forego hamachi altogether (although I would not)...

Qnext is neat in concept, but the GUI and flow of the app is total crap.. waste is pretty cool but as someone said its kind of hard for newbs to get it...

just my $.02
