try NOD32 by ESET. Many user consider it the best. Another excellent choice is AVG.

I use both to scan my downloaded files.

AVG is only a standard AntiVirus software, my mother had it on her computer and she had several viruses that it didn't detect. AVG is over-rated and not very good.

Check out http://www.av-comparatives.org/index.html?http://www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/overview.html

Only the software with the ADVANCED++ are the best.

I would go with NOD32 because it got the best ratings from AV-Comparatives and Virus Bulletin.

Any antivirus is better than no antivirus, so why don`t try some free such as AVG or AVAST for start.

I use AVG, and I like it. It isn't bloated like Norton is.

Don't get Norton, it is probably one of the most over rated virus scanners on the market. They made a name for themselves early on and it never died.

Nod32 is probably the best antivirus with great security and low system usage. After that its just up to you to decide what to use there are a few free programs such as avg and avast which is fine for most people.

Nod32 :icon_thum
This is one is very effective.

AVG is also good, but Nod32 is better in my opinion.

Anyone ever used that Panda Antivirus?

I've used their free scan to check my computer and it found things other antivirus programs didn't. I had the paid version on my computer for a few weeks before I had to reformat for other reasons, and it seemed pretty good.

Thanks for the info.
I have uninstalled Norton and installed NOD32 trial version.

Any feedback is welcome.

Nod32 is the best I would say. Ive recently uninstalled Norton.

Indeed. Nod32 is excellent because of it's absurdly low CPU utilization. Even on Nod32 though, I leave the file system monitor off and scan only incoming files from the internet and schedule weekly virus scans, to speed things up.

Spoke too soon. I have been invaded! Trojans, etc. As soon as I clean them up and restart, they're back.

I keep getting a warning that my computer is infected and "Would you like to update your security and download registry?" When i click on it I get an offer to buy software.

I can't get rid of it. Does anyone know what this is?:icon_salu

I agree. I find kaspersky very good. Anyone wanting another free alternative, I remember reading somewhere about AOL having a free AV, which is built on the Kaspersky AV engine. Never mind the "AOL" name, it is a good free alt. I too get a weird feeling about anything with AOL's name in it, but....the evidence speaks for itself.

I use AVG most but not alone, with ZoneAlarm suite and SpySweeper. I think that nowadays spyware have become more dangerous because they can be used for stealing your private information. Moreover I think that your system's 'health' depends very much on what sites you are visiting

I would surely recommend NOD32 as my first choice. I am using it from their very beggining and never had any problem. Easy to setup, low system consumption, reliable and in my opinion very good choice. Easy to manage in network environment.
I also have some good experience with Kaspersky. But, I prefer NOD32.

My advice is "don't use antivirus software"
they are ridicilous. and they make your computer much slower for nothing.
I haven't been using antivirus for a year and no trojan or virus or worm encountered.only little spies.
then how could I can do it?
I am just careful using opera and firefox both of them and don't take any files on IM-messengers like msn or yahoo messenger. And of course e-mails. I am erasing emails if I don't know sender.
for hackers, I use Acronis privacy shield. It is the best.
and of course I am not using windows firewall. It makes slower too
and here is the conclusion:
best game playing with best frames.
much more speed on applications
by the way, the best antivirus is dead antivirus, don't use antivirus softwares.

I like spysweeper with antivirus. The footprint is quite small. And it means I don't need windows security centre crap....

i used avg and was quite happy with it, however decided to give Nod32 a try and it found 12 viruses that avg had missed. needless to say i've switched permanently to Nod32 now.

If you don't use an Anti-Virus software then how do you know that you don't have viruses, malwares, trojans, etc.? The only way to know is to use an Anti-Virus software.

You can get viruses, malwares and trojans from simple clicking on a Google search result.
All those steps you listed might help but doesn't ensure that you don't have malwares installed on your system. Viruses get through Firefox and Opera as well.

I know because Nod32 has stoped them before.

It takes an Anti-Virus software to detect viruses, malwares, trojans, etc.
Advanced viruses, malwares, and trojans don't show up in your Task Manager.
A lot of times they can be hidden deep into your system (like root kits) or even injected into common Windows dll files.

For the record Nod32 doesn't slow down your system unless you have a crappy computer.

Thanks.:icon_thum

Not necessarily. I run Nod32 to not actively scan the file system and only scan incoming files from the internet and do full system scans once a week. I've been using this setup for over a year and Nod32 has never had to block an incoming virus or remove one that was already on the hard drive. If you're careful enough and are behind some kind of NAT or firewall, you should be ok without anti-virus software on Windows.

That being said, I agree, Nod32 uses so few system resources that there's no reason not to have it run, to be cautious.

I like Bit Defender. Have been using it for years, and has never led me wrong. But, I do agree that Norton is way overrated. My friend tried out norton 2007 for about 4 months then trashed it because of the insane amount of cpu and ram that is used, and the horrible scanning system. For spyware, SpySweeper all the way. Have always used it, and it is only getting better. And, for a firewall, ZoneAlarm Pro. It is simply the best firewall that you can get today.

Time to switch to Linux? Don't really need anti virus if you set up everything correctly, saves you some computing resource if you will... heh

There are quite a few nice distros that provides easy installation and friendly graphical interface like Ubuntu, Fedora etc.,
