Well there is also Linux.
I been planning in playing with Linux for awhile but have not gotten around to it.
Does anyone have any recommendations for which Linux to start with?

i also did a bit of sounding out about linux, and got alot of good vibes about mandrake linux. I never took it any further though, i hardly have enough knowledge for on OS never mind two. and i wont give up my XP whatever the evils of the gates empire.

i tried mandrake linux a couple months ago. i really liked it, BUT it is nest to impossible (for me) to install somthing. you need to use a command line.... ehh... im actually semi-afraid of the command line. i grew up with a nice GUI. i NEED it.

are you sure?
what are you talking about. Linux is freeware, open source and downloads are completely legal and even encouraged.
Linux is the only real competition Micro$oft has.

Shocking isn't it!!!!! LOL
Rickio: Try this version......it's a lot easier to get into Linux this way.....I started with Redhat....and GRRRR the damn ATI drivers for my video card....killed my install and I said the hell with it for awhile....but it's all good now....
http://www.winlinux.net/2003/download2.html
Download speeds are pretty good....
Make sure your online when you install it since they ask you to reg. before it installs.....just give a phoney email address.

The link to the program?
http://jungle.metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/distributions/winlinux/2003/WinLinux2003FreeVersion.exe
Or
http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/winlinux/2003/WinLinux2003FreeVersion.exe
Right click > Save Target As or Save Link Target As in Mozilla.
Enjoy! Don't forget to stay online when you start setting it up - it'll just exit if your not connected - give a fake email addy and whatever else and your done. Also if it refuses to boot to linux try removing your videocard - it doesn't support most cards on it's own...you need to surf around to find a driver for whatever card you have (if someones coded one) I know theres a decent ATI one floating around so do a google search.

See Rickio . . when you posted earlier, I thought about you. THIS is why I have repeatedly got away from Linux, . . . and then . . .by the time you install gnome or kde . . . the install is a gig ! wtf ?
So . . by the time you have to fart around and install the hardware, AND it's already bloated, and then be proficient with command line stuff . . .
Hell if I want a gig O/S, Im sticking with XP, and spank it into submission.
.
Yeah man , you gotta point. But I wouldn't use it as my primary OS till I knew what I was doing. I was gonna set it up on a extra computer. Actually I will likely install either win2000 or WinXp as well on a seperate partition.
command line isn't that hard if your semi used to it. I have played with unix and dos, so I figure I can work with it. I am just gonna mess around and then probably set up that extra puter as a ftp server and share files.

Rickio have you checked out Phat linux (http://phatlinux.com) ? It is quite good and made so you can try Linux with no experience! It Can work on an NTFS partition and a FAT partition! You should try it! It is very nice. http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=2357 is the download page. The best linux distrobution to me is debian (http://debian.org) or Slackware (http://slackware.com) Ok well that is my two cents oh yeh and also Dragon linux (http://dragonlinux.sf.net)

Welcome, yes it's 2003 - the last version I tried was 2001 I think.
RedHat.....is evil in some ways....if you do choose to mess with it - buy the disc's don't download it. There only like 19 bucks so it's not insane like paying 200 for WinXP. Check out the Linux part of ZP too I'm sure you'll get a nice feel for the OS by talking to the longtime Linux users - not many but it's better then nothing. LOL
Krell: Your right, Linux is a bitch....but that 1gb+ stuff is all addon crap you can get the install down to about 300-500mb if you just install what you use. Then you add in user space and it's swap partition.....which does blow it up. Yea, it's not a full homeuser OS just yet.....keep an eye on it though. I for one am not shelling out tons of cash to MS just to be cut off by there shitty .NET system. And the concept that they can remotely stop me from using/viewing/copying/editing my own files....is disturbing. I'll stick to XP/Me/95......till Linux goes mainstream.
Peace all, Later

Big businesses might buy the new secure systems but the people at home wont take this crap. We can go buy different brands of hardware and software. Or there will be guys that'll find a way around it. Palladium is the end for Microsoft. They may be big, they may be rich but they need consumers that TRUST a product to survive. BOYCOTT PALLADIUM!!!!!!!!
