how to determine version of Windows

I know which version I'm running on *my* computer (grossly speaking): XP.
But sometimes I have relatives or friends who ask for my help
(especially over the phone)
and I don't even know which version of Windoze they're running,
so it's hard to know what to expect on their computer,
or how to interpret what happens, etc.

Is there something (or a small number of things) one can (tell someone to) do
to determine which version of Windows is running on a given computer?

hit windows key + pause break. that brings up system properties. It will display the OS there.

Or if they can't find the windows key, you can go to start / run and type winver

Yet another way is to right-click on My Computer and choose Properties
