What do I do if i lost my Hd's index?

I have a lot of files on this HD and when i try to access it, it says there is a problem with the index.

Thanks

Hi Jorge,

1) Start > Run > Services.msc = Enable and Automatic.

2) In Windows Explorer, right click the drive and DE select "Allow Indexing Service to . . ."

This will cause the drive to churn a bit as it sets the attributes in the files and folders.

3) Afterwards, do the reverse and select that option.

4) THEN - go to cmd prompt and type chkdsk c: /f/r

Use whatever the drive letter is. Use both the /f and the /r switches and let it cook. In fact, go have a Corona.

Ok, i will try this. Do i risk loosing the data if i do this? I don't think so, but i am nervous about it.

Is this a problem with the drive? Should i replace once i do this?

That won't risk the data at all. I would also suggest a download or purchase of Easy Recovery Personal, it works wonders for recoving lost hard drive data - even after a format.

LOL!

While it's true that the Index *we are spying on you* Service has nothing at all to do with the Master File Table, or the backup one that's ingrained in OS from XP up, you don't instill a lot of confidence by telling him to get recovery software ahead of time. :D

Of course, I'm sure that he already HAS a copy of a Digiwiz Mini PE CD, or the Diamond 3n1 Boot CD . . . surely his friends and coworkers think enough of his endeavors to burn him a copy for X-mas!

Besides this, would I . . OF ALL PEOPLE . . . suggest a method which would threaten the integrity of this data?

Sure, I might suggest using children as an alternative fuel source this winter, but I would never put an infrastructure or data at risk.

Tip of the day:

Don't have a current backup of the data on your RAID set, and need to make a change?

PULL one of the drives out, and set it on the server. After patches, etc If all is well, put it back in, and let it rescrub. If things went to hell, use it as the known good and you will be right back where you were.
