What do you fine folks think about polygamy? Any rational or irrational arguments for or against?

For clarity I'm talking about a man taking several wives, nothing deviant like a woman taking several husbands.

Personally I am for monogamy, i would much rather have one life partne much like the resourceful penguin. Its great that your thinking "Oh man multiple wives would be great, I could have all the sex I want!!!" but what about the wives needs? Well, I'll stick to rational for now...

Since you have restricted polygamy to polygyny (1man,multi-women) as opposed to polyandry (1woman, multi-men), I am going to oppose.

Before I oppose, I will admit the sole rational argument in favour of polygyny is that in terms of reproduction (and, to oversimplify) - women are quality, men are quantity, so you only need one man to fertilise many women. This of course, also means we should choose the best candidate men and incinerate the rest as a waste of space and effort. And the choice should be made by the women, since any man would have a conflict of interest in trying to save himself.

However, I only support polygamy if it's open polygamy - with any combination of multiple men and women. I oppose gay marriage unless polygamy of this sort is made legal at the same time. So it becomes about free choice rather than social engineering.

Myself, I'd rather just stick to One Special Person (if I could only find that person!). There are so many complications even in a one-to-one committed relationship that a polygamous relationship would be orders of magnitude more messy. But then again, the polygyny you are advocating is really some kind of chauvanist one-to-one relationship between the man and each of the women, with them having no relationship to each other, so ...

More likely would be Open Relationships. This of course, already happens a lot. And it's much easier than maintaining a multilateral committment, to just share and enjoy and adjust to situations as they develop without being tied to here and there.

Being a traditionalist, I'm not in favour of an Open Relationships society.

The answer to what?
Already in China there is a serious shortage of women due to many parents preferentially birthing boys (and aborting girls) due to the one child policy. If polygamy was an answer to anything it'd have to be the way you've described as "deviant" ... though, it would be inefficient from a population point of view, it would, however, selectively breed humans with competitive ... uh, gonads.

If the world male population suddenly drops (most likely because they're all going to war, though so are the women these days), then it may be a workable answer to a social situation that may develop... but as I say, in that case, the women would rule, because there'd be more of them.

I had a hard time watching that show on Showtime about polygamy. I just couldn't relate to the concept. I prefer monogamy, myself. I couldn't imagine having to share my partner with other ppl. It's always interesting that it's usually the man who gets multiple partners. What's in it for the women?

I'm not sure I understand the question. Doesn't each of the women get the opportunity to have a small piece of a man's time? And they can still use the rest of their time to work and make money for him.

I don't think polygamy should even be raised as a possible legality question. America was, sadly enough, built upon religious ties, whether you believe that or not, doesn't matter. Because, America's foundation, was laid with principles similar to the Europe it left, though with different interests.

Overall what I'm getting at, is that polygamy doesn't fit our societal structure. It's surrounded in stigma because of our religious foundational ideals.

America is a monogamous society. Watch Oprah, or Jerry Springer, and you'll see that having more than one, is considered cheating, mistrustful, "playing", slutty, and instilling jealousy, which is in part tied into our competitive nature implied by our economic system, capitalism. One doesn't profit with the ventures spread and out of focus.

However, polygamy IS a widely diverse culture! There are place where it does reside, and is the major foundation of a society. Tibet. Africa. South America. All have socioeconomic niches where polygamy, and polygyny are THE ONLY WAY OF LIFE.

Tibet, it is essential. One couldn't survive without polygyny (one wife, many husbands). The climate, the land, the family, the herd, all need tending. One man cannot do it alone. Polygyny has provided an answer to lifes troubles there.

I think maybe the question should be better worded as “who in this thread has only had sex with one other person”. And if you answer honestly all of us practice polygamy in a way. Eventually after many tries you find yourself with someone you can live with but does that make you monogamist. Things happen, times change, and people certainly change. I don’t know of one person ( that I personally know) who has practiced true monogamy throughout their life. Even my great grandparents.

I think the majority of people didn't answer the question asked in the poll. "Should Polygamy be considered legal?".
Instead most voted with their basic reflex of "I don't want to practice polygamy".
