Hi everyone. Well I recently was informed of a job opportunity that requires me to learn the Vi editor. Now i've done some internet searches and i've used bittorrent to download O'reileys ebook. But how exactly am I supposed to install this and use it on my laptop. I know it might seem like a stupid question but I really want to get this job. I have a laptop that I can use to practice on so I guess all I need is to be pointed in the right direction so that I can start. Super Thanks to anyone who can get me going. Thanks again everyone.

It comes with the UNIX OS. Also Linux I think, but someone will have to verify that.

Don't worry, it's weird, but not hard. You could probably learn it in like an hour.

Thanks for the quick response. I've done a google search for Unix and went to their home webpage but couldn't find a download section for the operating system. Any ideas? Thanks again for your help.

OMG! Just out of curiousity, what exactly is the Job. If it entails using linux or some form of unix, vi could be least of your problems.

I don't think you want to install UNIX on your windows machine. Maybe you can use some sort of UNIX emulator, but typically UNIX is only run on UNIX machines. Like HPUX boxes. If you have access to Linux or even SunOS they should have vi as well.

Don't worry about it. Get yourself a vi manual, available all over the web, and stay after work your first day for about an hour and practice. That's all you'll need.

there exist a few free examples, a decent one is here:

a better more true "clone" is here:

both are free, as in beer :)
