i just got a 400gb external hard drive that connects via usb.
i noticed that any file over 4gb wont go onto the drive, apparently fat32 hd's have a limitation on the drive to stop files bigger than 4gb being moved onto them.
does anyone here know how to convert my 400gb external from to ntfs?
im running windows xp professional and tried the dos command C:\> CONVERT G: /fs:ntfs
but once it finished and i rebooted the pc the external drive was still fat32.

I suggest running an XP install CD, let it detect all your drives and format it from there, NTFS quick format, then just exit.

For everyone - Right click My Computer > Manage > Manage Disc
Learn to use this - assign drive letter, format, partition etc etc
Clarify, did you convert to NTFS, or did you FORMAT NTFS and then move files to there.
If you moved the files, did you move them from NTFS -> NTFS, or from FAT32 -> NTFS?
Finally, learn to use the Right Click > Sharing and Security > Security > Ownership and permissions areas for your drives, will save headaches.
You may also want to Start > run > CMD > chkdsk :? /f
replace the ? with the drive letter assigned to your drive.
