A week or so ago I had some major problems with the default fonts on my laptop and I have been needing to wipe it out for quite some time, so I decided to go ahead and do it, and reinstall the OS. (XP home)
Since I have done so, it has been running a little bit strangly, even though I have installed very minimal programs back on, its like something is bogging it down in the background, when I am on a web page, the scrollling seems to lag and goes up/down in slow skips as opposed to a smooth scroll. And when I am on a the msn messenger if I were to to nudge someone, the sound is quick but the movement of the window is very slow and labored.
I usually set my power options to make it go to sleep and disconnect from the network when I close it or when I walk away from it for some period of time, but even though I have set that, it still never does, only the screen saver comes on but it never disconnects or goes to sleep, which causes it to get very warm and the fan is constantly running.
Can anyone give me some pointers as to why this is happening??:icon_scra

When you re-install Windows, did you install on top of old Windows OS or was it a clean install?

Digital Junkie, Yes it was a clean install, I wiped everything out first, I think I had a few tweaks, which I have not done again because its hard to remember, but I didnt think it would make that big of a difference.

Silentscream, help me out with what you are talking about, I am not sure what graphics drivers are, pardon me for being so stupid, lol, just when I think I know alot, I realize, I know nothing. errrrggg!!

He is talking about your video/graphics card's driver, check the video card manufacturer's web site for the latest version for that card or the one came with your laptop.

Hmmmmmmm, I looked in my device manager, and my video controllers have a yellow question mark next to them. And when I try the hardware update wizard, it cannot find a driver for it. But down by my sound/video controllers its shows "legacy video controllers" and show that they are working properly.
Am I missing the Video/graphics card driver??? I have looked on the Toshiba support website, (my laptop is a Toshiba Satelite L150-S104) and there is no driver available for the video hardware.
Obviously I need something or I wouldnt have those yellow question marks in my device manager, but cant find a thing. HELP! I am learning here. Where do I Find my graphics drivers???

Do you have a driver disc for your laptop or a restore disc? If it's a restore disc, the drivers might be on it, otherwise there might be a driver disc for all the embedded hardware.

Ok, thanks you guys, I dont have time to get on this til a bit later, but I will post back with what I found.

Can you explain what belarc advisor is?? Is it something I find online? I have never heard of it.

Tried alot of different tweaks for my system, and it still hasnt sped up, hopefully when I get this driver issue figured it will solve my problem.

Thank you, for all your help, will post back soon.

By the way, is this going to take care of the power setting problem too??

hmm probs not, im not sure about the power settings

and belarc advisor is a small free program that lists everything about the machine it is running from

its very handy for laptops or misterious old comps

.

edit

I have been gone all night last night and all day today, so I still need to check out that site that digital junkie recommended, which I will be doing tonight.
SilentScream--I have pushed the button that the lid normally pushes down and makes it go to sleep when I close the lid, and it does nothing now, but as for any other manual way to make it go to sleep I guess I am not sure how to do that.
I am downloading the belarc advisor now, I hope I know how it works. :-) Let ya know. :-}

Ok, after doing a bit more research, these are the devices I am missing drivers for.

82801DBM USB 2.0 EHCI Controller (ICH4-M B1 step)
82852GM/GME/GMV/PM, 855GM/GME Montara Integrated Graphics Device (A2-step)

So there it is, my graphics device, probably was a bit hasty in posting all that crap up there, LOL
Only problem is, I have googled my little heart out, cant find the drivers. HELP!

it took a little bit of work but here u go

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProductID=2159&DwnldID=9870&strOSs=44&OSFullName=Windows*%20XP%20Professional&lang=eng

turns out ure graphics chip is just an intel one

and this is the link to the universal intel graphics driver

hope this helps with at least one problem

I downloaded the graphics driver from the link that you provided. As I am trying to install it, it stops the installation and gives me this warning.
"The software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with WIndows XP. Continuing your isntallation of this software may impair or destabilize the correct operation of your system either immediately or in the future. Microsoft strongly recomends that you stop this installation now and contact the software vendor for software that has passed windows Logo testing.

It then gives me the option to, "continue anyway" or "Stop Installation".

Is this normal??? Should I continue??

silentscream
September 25th, 2006, 06:18 PM
it is normal and a part of windows xp

it is a choice u will have to make

either try these drivers or try to find an older version that is microsoft signed

id try them. but it is ure laptop so u have to decide (however if ure xp install is fresh then at least u wont lose much if u have to reinstall for any reason)

use ur own judgement and hope for the best lol

Ok, so bad idea. I went ahead with the install, and that was a mistake. The screen went completely black and stayed that way. I would restart, windows would SLOWLY load.........black sceen.
Started it in safe mode, removed the nasty driver, everything is back to the way it used to be.
I am at a loss. *sigh*
