Check out these Russian "Power Boots". (http://powerboots.com/cnt_en/index_en.html)They have diesel-driven cylinders for each leg and can supposedly propel you along at 25mph or more. Here's a video showing them in action. And the (under-construction) official site makes this intriguing, though slightly dubious, claim:

Once a top secret military gear in the ex-USSR, the boots had been worked out to boost the soldiers ability to move further and faster. They never got to be used for their initial purpose. Instead, with the end of the cold war, the boots have been re-orientated towars extreme sport and leisure.

Although the news anchor in the Russian video report hardly looks impressed, the Power Boots seem pretty cool to me. But what's the benefit of diesel-powered pistons compared to the powerful springs, as used in this set-up?

Also, which of these is fastest? The guy flying around on springs is certainly moving quickly, but then he looks like some sort of acrobatic. The only way to find out to have a proper race. Perhaps the Russians could substitute nitromethane for diesel. Any volunteers for a showdown?
