Recently there are ed2k servers appearing as clones of the original DonkeyServer set. These are as follows...

DonkeyServer No2 | www.firstload.de / quad opteron 32gb / germany | 72.51.39.151:4242
DonkeyServer No3 | www.firstload.de / quad opteron 32gb | 72.51.39.152:4242
DonkeyServer No4 | www.firstload.de / quad opteron 32gb / germany | 72.51.39.153:4242

The legitimate DonkeyServers come from the 62.241.53.X range, make sure you have them on your static list or something. These "DonkeyServers" have really high user amounts and really low ping times that remain far to constant. Symptoms of bad servers include: few search results, fake search results, incomplete files or unexplainable low IP. The Bigbang servers are notorious for this as well.

Recommended safe servers...

DonkeyServer No1 - 62.241.53.2:4242
DonkeyServer No2 - 62.241.53.16:4242
DonkeyServer No3 - 62.241.53.17:4242
DonkeyServer No4 - 62.241.53.15:4242
DonkeyServer No5 - Currently Offline
DonkeyServer No6 - 62.241.53.4:4242
<<< Saugcenter >>> - 81.169.143.167:7777
ByteDevils - 194.213.0.20.:3306*
ChezToff - 213.186.60.106:4661
ChezToff2 - 213.251.136.83:4661
German-Wargames II - 212.112.234.177:5555
www.UseNeXT.to - 212.112.234.146:4661

*There are other ByteDevils servers with similar IPs but they are currently not trusted.

If you want to maintain this list and only this list you need to go to your options and turn off the settings that update server.met after connecting to a new server and make sure that your server.met isnt auto-updated often. There are probably more servers out there that are fake but also more that are legit. If anyone has something to add to these please post. :icon_pira

If you're not sure a server is legit, you can also use eMule with KAD which doesn't requires connection with any server. :)

Well the reason I posted this is because alot of people still use servers, including myself, plus if there were such high numbers on these fake servers (provided the numbers weren't fake) then maybe it's time to talk. :)

I used it all before, long ago. I dont know how people exist on this.. Updating peerguardian, dogging fake servers, filtering through fake files, incomplete files, not connecting, people dropping off, waiting for someone to come on the network that has the file you want and to complete it.

That's part of the beauty and fun of it, Shawners. People have different tastes in what they find interests them. You seem to love music so places like Oink are great for you. I love movies and emule is suited to my needs in this regard.

Updating peerguardian? I do use Peerguardian2 after it was opensourced it got even better. Primarily I use it to block people who are sharing crap files or no files in other words as a 'leech blocker'.

As far as fake servers go I usually thought those were the ones with less than 5,000 users and typically tend to avoid those. I did notice this similiar naming scheme with popular servers...notice 'donkeyserver 1' and 'donkey server 1' aren't the same thing but yet enough people frequent both so that it doesn't matter.

I've never run a server on the ed2k network and it really doesn't make much sense to me. What is the point of having a server that doesn't serve as as a chat ala 'winmx' or 'dc++' where users can interact with one another. What do people get out of running the servers since there doesn't seem to be any userinteraction other than clients connecting/disconnecting with no chatting.

I've never really worried about fake servers..usually consider the ones with around a 100 or so users as the 'fakes'

As far as fake files go...I'd say its about a 3 or 4 % range. You do get them sometime but typically things are what they are supposed to be. Ways to spot fake files..usually anything with a .wmv extension and movie files are generally 700mb nowadays for a quality non kazaa file.

I remember back in 98 buying my pc a 13gig harddrive was advertised as being 'more space than you'll ever need or use.' Its laughable now that broadbands becoming a standard and 700mb movie file downloads are now typical with 30 to 40 % of internet traffic being BT (filesharing).

Company's know this and market for it indirectly with lines like 'share home movies and music online' with friends and family.

I once thought people with broadband were snobs for looking down on those still on dialup but have now found myself feeling a little spoiled actually in much the same way the hong kong martial arts movie scene was dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century with Jackie chan's Project A part 2. I've found myself now 'up on the times' by paying for a broadband internet service.

I've filled up that 300gigabyte harddrive I won in a raffle here on zeropiad at least 3 weeks ago. I think it may have taken me a month or two to do that.

The mvix player is so cool. I'd recommend it to anyone. I'm seriously considering actually buying another one and getting a 500gigbyte drive to go into it. I love the portability and ease of use of it. being able to take it directly from my computer and hook it up to a normal tv set and watch any movie I want anytime without the need to convert anything. its awesome.

Emule is loved because its got a good filehashing system but even that can be fuckered if you are still on dialup and lose your connection intermittently during a transfer. I had that happen to me once when I was download a rather large software program actaully i'd had the download interrupted several times by the power being turned off abruptly to the pc without closing programs down properly. So even emule isn't perfect.

Its got a lot of other good things about it I haven't mentioned. People do drop off and come back on a lot. Ideally it should be run 24/7 and in most cases it will take a week to get a 700mb file at 3kb/sec. but usually this is for a 'rare' file that can't be found anyplace else. I'd rather wait a week to get a file I really wanted than not be able to have it at all.

so to each his own.

This thread should not be about what anyone likes other than ed2k. Different strokes for different folks as they say. Let the people have their thread in peace please. I like emule too and use it from time to time. There are many movies and tv shows on there that are hard to find.

Thanks for the info

The ed2k has a very low fake file rate (in my opinion) and I think it has to do with the quality of the server you connect to. Your results may vary if you use a global search but either way your pretty good off. Anymore the best reason to run an ed2k server is because it is mega advertising for random websites.

I don't ever have problems with fake files myself, by posting this I am hoping to improve other's ed2k experience.
