TDK have announced that they've achieved a 200Gb capacity using blue laser technology. They already have a 100Gb prototype. A 200 gig disc could store around 18 hours of HD video encoded at 24Mbps.

The 200 gig test disc stores 33.3Gb on each of six layers on a single-sided disc, whereas the 100 gig prototype stores 25Gb on four layers. Both are still within the tolerances of the Blu-ray playback specifications.

Taro Ikushima, Product Manager Commercial Products Europe, said: “The ultra-ambitious technology roadmap for Blu-ray has now been confirmed as realistic, with landmarks such as this proving the long term value of the format against its rivals. TDK was the first to develop a prototype 100GB recordable Blu-ray Disc, and yet again, our landmark achievement in creating a 200GB disc further cements the company’s position as a true pioneer in advancing the capabilities of optical media.”

Given the speed at which such technologies actually make it to the consumer, it could be some time before we see this, particularly given the current cost of media. Still, it's good to see the boundaries being pushed.

TDK have also made advances in write speeds for standard Blu-ray discs, with up to 6x (216Mbps) on a single-layer 25 gig disc.
