i have heard of numerous DVD players which support DivX files, but they seem to support only .MP4 files, but my dvd backup collection consists of .avi DivX files. are there DVD players which support the .avi extension?
i understand the .avi part is the container, wheras DivX is the codec, so would it be possible to convert my .avi files to the .mp4 container, without increased file ize or loss in quality? perhaps virtualdub?
many thanks for your help,

Most DivX certified DVD player I know, do support .avi files (backward compatible?) however I have not seen any support .mp4 extension. I don't think you need to convert your .avi files, but if you not sure which DVD player will play them maybe you can bring a few copies to the store & try them before you buy!

I currently have 2 .avi players that support DivX 3 - XViD.
The KiSS DP-500 is my favorite, it streams .avi files from my external HDDs upstairs to the player hooked up to my TV downstairs via ethernet. Lossless transfer from PC to player and no need to even burn any type of disc.
I also use the Philips DVP-642. Gotta burn discs for this one but it seems to play almost anything. It's a little shakey on older stuff, but most new rips play just fine. $55 at Walmart.
Lastly, I just saw a Toshiba DivX player at CostCo. $44 and it says it plays .avi files. Need to look more into that one.

Thanks for this, wasnt sure because a lot of the players say .mp4, but not .avi.
come to think of it converting the files wouldnt be an option becuse they're all on cd-r discs anyway!
i'll look into the players you have suggested, buy by the sounds of it any DivX certified player will do the job,
cheers for the info,
