XM Satellite Radio has recently obtained three, critical FCC clearances, part of a protracted regulatory process. Both XM and rival Sirius have been mired in a muddy back-and-forth with the agency, and a raft of FM-transmitting devices have been earmarked for review. In the latest turn, the FCC has given a green light to the Audiovox Xpress, Delphi RoadyXT, and XM Sportscaster, three marquee retail products. That paves the way for partner manufacturers to resume production, and comes ahead of the all-important holiday shopping season.

The FCC probes have focused on the ability of a number of players to transmit programming though nearby FM receivers. For example, the XM Sportscaster allows users to play satellite stations through a car stereo by using an available frequency like 90.1 MHz. But possible interference with existing, terrestrial radio frequencies stirred regulatory concern. XM still has five other devices that are still under review, though the company has expressed confidence that it will gain necessary approvals. Sirius Satellite Radio has also grappled with FCC reviews, though the company has also recently received critical green lights.
