Last month, Christina Johnson's son told her he was shipping out to a Marine base in Japan and needed his iPod fixed.
She had two weeks to get it repaired but didn't know where to take it.
"I was concerned that it wouldn't be repaired in time," Johnson said.
She didn't want to mail it to Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) , because she knew it could be months before she saw it again.
"Then, my sister told me about a radio ad," she said.
The commercial was for Leo-Al Tech, a computer repair shop in Turlock, Calif.
A Hot Business Opportunity
The business is one of just a handful nationwide that repair iPods, even though the MP3 music player is one of the hottest-selling electronic devices on the market.
The Turlock store added the service earlier this year after hearing from dozens of people in the valley who had broken iPods but no place to take them. The store was certified this week by Apple to sell new iPods. It also can repair iPods that are no longer under warranty.
The radio ad put Johnson on the right path, she said.
"I called them and drove down to Turlock, where they opened the store and personally met me there."
Her son's disabled iPod, a 20-gigabyte model no longer made by Apple, wouldn't hold a charge.
Employees at Leo-Al Tech determined that the unit's battery was no good. They replaced it and included a new recharging cable. It cost her US$60.
"It certainly was better than having to buy a whole new iPod for my son," Johnson said. "A new one would have cost at least $300 to get one comparable to what he has.
"The turn-around time was great," she added. "They had it back in my hands within the week."
