TOPSHAM, Maine - Many motorists seeking to improve their mileage as gas prices soar this summer are examining everything — right down to the air in their tires. And for a growing number, plain old air isn't good enough.

George Bourque of Fairfield is one of those who's driving around on tires filled with pure nitrogen, the same stuff that NASCAR racers use.

Bourque, an engineer, said he has seen a 1 to 1.5 mile-per-gallon increase since he began filling his tires with nitrogen, which is touted as maintaining tire pressure longer and resisting heat buildup on hot summer days.

90% of the "service" stations around here charge for air now.I'm sure a lot marketing $ went into this product.
I guess the thinking is if people are willing to pay to watch cars drive around in circles they'll pay for air.If you can get them to buy air you can get them to buy " better" air.

Jersey is the only state where self service pumps are illegal.

Nitrogen already fills 78% of your tires. Why do I have reservations as to the last 22% making any difference.

<3 Full service. It's one of my favorite things about NJ.

Why is it that 98% of the gas station attendents who pump gas in Jersey are either hindu or muslim, and 9/10 of those are rude as hell?

That's because they are from New Jersey. It's a residency requirement.
