EXCLUSIVE: ABC Cancels Mel Gibson's Holocaust TV Mini-Series Because Of His DUI Anti-Semitic Slurs


EXCLUSIVE: I have learned that, because of his DUI anti-Semitic slurs, ABC canceled development with Mel Gibson's television production company on a non-fiction TV mini-series about the Holocaust that was still in the early pre-script stage. The deal had been announced late last year based on the self-published 1998 memoir of Flory A. Van Beek, a Dutch Jew whose gentile neighbors hid her from the Nazis but who lost several relatives in concentration camps, titled "Flory: Survival in the Valley of Death." Gibson (his Friday mugshot, left) was not expected to act in the 4-hour mini-series, nor was it certain that his name would even be publicly attached to the final product. But Quinn Taylor, ABC's senior vice president for movies for television, had said at the time the project was announced that the attention-getting value of having Gibson attached was a factor in greenlighting the Holocaust project. After the huge success of his The Passion of the Christ, networks and studios sought out Gibson and his Icon production company because they felt he'd reached a previously untapped spiritual audience for Hollywood entertainment.

But the attention-getting value of having Gibson attached to the Holocaust project post-DUI arrest is what got the project killed at ABC. In Tuesday's New York Times, an ABC TV network spokesperson did not connect the project’s termination to Gibson’s remarks. But I'm told by sources close to Gibson that the decision was totally ABC's, and it was because of his DUI anti-Semitic tirade, and that Gibson and his people didn't challenge it. This is the first piece of business lost by Gibson because of his arrest during which he blurted anti-Semitic slurs while drunk.

Earlier today, in an exclusive interview with me, Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean and founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, called on Gibson to to drop plans to produce the Holocaust mini-series for ABC. "It seems inconceivable that he should, given these cirumstances, make a film about the Holocaust. That would be like getting somebody that has a past association with the KKK to do a film on African-Americans. The African-Americans would be up in arms.

That's the way Jews feel. If you don't like the Jews, don't do a film about the central issue of modern Jewish history, the Holocaust. It's insensitive to their feelings, especially if you don't like them. That's why I think he should drop out.

This is not a film he could do." I've also learned that, even though Disney is the parent company of ABC, the movie division's Buena Vista arm will still distribute Gibson's action epic Apocalyptic in December as planned because of the loyalty felt by top executives John Cook and Oren Aviv to Gibson. Presently, I'm told Gibson is in a non-residential alcohol recovery program in the Malibu area.

Once inside the car, a source directly connected with the case says Gibson began banging himself against the seat. The report says Gibson told the deputy, "You mother f****r. I'm going to f*** you." The report also says "Gibson almost continually [sic] threatened me saying he 'owns Malibu' and will spend all of his money to 'get even' with me."

The report says Gibson then launched into a barrage of anti-Semitic statements: "F*****g Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." Gibson then asked the deputy, "Are you a Jew?"

Thats jacked up........but, you know I wonder if the speed at the depth to which this scandal is unfolding has anything to do with his fervent Catholic ideology and the way that "The Temptation of Christ" kind of stuck its finger in Hollywood's eye by proving that religious films could make big bucks.

Hollywood and religiona have never really got along based on their underlying notions of boundaries and what is or is not acceptable. Now Hollywood has big punching bag to point at and say that religions Hollywood point man seemingly as no boundaries as well.

My friends had one question for me after I saw Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ:

Is it anti-Semitic?

It's a testament to Gibson's public relations genius that this is an open question.

You'd think it was impolite to make anything of the fact that Gibson's father is a Holocaust denier who claims the European Jews simply moved to Australia.

True, we don't choose our parents, but Mel Gibson has not only not dissociated himself from his father's views but indirectly affirmed them ("The man never lied to me in his life," he told Peggy Noonan in Reader's Digest; pressed to affirm that the Holocaust was real, he replied that many people died in World War II and some were Jews--the classic Holocaust-revisionist two-step).

Nor would it do to dwell on the "traditional" (i.e., ultra right-wing) Catholicism Gibson practices, which specifically rejects the reforms of Vatican II, presumably including its repudiation of the belief that "the Jews" are collectively responsible for the death of Christ.

So how anti-Semitic is The Passion?

Gibson claims that there are good Jews and bad Jews in the movie, as in the Gospels.

This is true, but disingenuous:

In The Passion, the high priest Caiaphas and his faction are not just bad, they fit neatly into ancient Christian stereotypes:

They are rich, arrogant and gaudily dressed; they plot and scheme and bribe; they cleverly manipulate the brutal but straightforward Romans; they are gratuitously "cruel" and "hard-hearted," to quote Anne Catherine Emmerich, the nineteenth-century German nun whose visions of the Passion Gibson relied on for some of the more disgusting tortures he inflicts on Jesus.

Physically, they are anti-Semitic cartoons:

The priests have big noses and gnarly faces, lumpish bodies, yellow teeth; Herod Antipas and his court are a bizarre collection of oily-haired, epicene perverts.

The "good Jews" look like Italian movie stars (Magdalene actually is an Italian movie star, the lovely Monica Bellucci); Mary, who would have been around 50 and appeared 70, could pass for a ripe 35.

These visual characterizations follow not just the Oberammergau Passion Play that Hitler found so touching but a long tradition of Christian New Testament iconography in which the villains look Semitic and the heroes, although equally Jewish, look Northern European.



Gibson claims he's only telling the story as written in the Gospels, which he calls eyewitness accounts (historians say no).



It's a mystery to me why the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has given this crude and kitschy film a thumbs up ("deeply personal work of devotional art...the Jewish people are at no time blamed collectively for Jesus' death").

Gibson has violated just about every precept of the conference's own 1988 "Criteria" for the portrayal of Jews in dramatizations of the Passion (no bloodthirsty Jews, no rabble, no use of Scripture that reinforces negative stereotypes of Jews, etc.).

Even stranger is the enthusiasm for the film among Protestant evangelicals and fundamentalists, who seem not to realize how specifically Catholic Gibson's theology is.

A generation ago, "Bible-believing" Protestants would have been up in arms over, among other "popish heresies," the quasi-divine role given to Mary and the reverence for Christ's blood (in one extra-biblical scene, Mary on her knees mops the floor where he has been scourged, using some towels given to her by Pilate's kind and thoughtful wife).

Do evangelicals not have theology anymore--anything goes as long as it's "conservative," and puts Jesus on top?

You know what, my grandmother had a number tattooed on her arm and spent 3 years in a Nazi camp. That didn't make her Jewish. I was not raised Jewish and to be honest I don't know what makes a "Jew" a "Jew". My grand mother was Catholic but she was of Jewish decent and therefore "Evil" according too the powers that be. I am 1/8th Jewish according to Jews and mostly human according to me.
