IP providers that give away free antivirus/firewall/antispyware may include a p2p network reporting feature. One day after turning on The Pest Patrol anti spyware prog that came bundeled with EZ Armor (Computer Assocs.), I received an E-mail from Road Runner telling me that the Movie Assoc. has detected me downloading/uploading movies using Kazaa, (included my Kazaa name, IP, and movie titles), and asked me to stop or else...
Could this be true? Anyoane else experienced anything similar?

Do not use Kazaa! Its not safe at all. If youre looking for a simple p2p network and something like Kazaa try FrostWire or Ares.

Huh yeah.. A cease and desist letter from using another p2p network is much better.
Join usenet or private bt sites for movies, or just dont download them. Some members rent them when they get released and copy them with anydvd/dvd decryptor and compress them to fit on dvd5. IP didnt monitor you, nor knew what you was downloading. Other sources are logging on to every p2p network and sending cease and desist letters to your IP address for what your doing, and they notify the IP holder of that time and date.

As some say on here, at least with private bt networks.. The MPAA just monitor you and dont send out any cease and desist letters, nor file a DMCA complaint or notify the fbi on the stuff your downloading/uploading.

Its a collective effort I'd imagine kinda like the private groups that used to use DC..

They sit back collect information and then bust a whole ring of people with way more evidence then you could imagine throwing the book at whoever trys to oppose them.

Lately though you dont hear much about file sharing busts period even canada has turned coat on stiffend penalties and giving away information I think the world is comming to a momentary lapse of reason somewhat realizing that it will never be completely contained.

Filesharing is fire you cannot attack it from the middle if you do you now have two seperate fires that will look for fuel source and continue to spread.

Oh yes and as an addition never sign and return a cease and desist letter it is admittance to guilt and will be used in court.

If they require you to do anything of the sort simply drop the ISP and pick up a new one.

They loose you're business and if they loose enough business maybe they'll start thinking twice about there plan of action.

And the kicker is sign up about six months later for you're old ISP and they'll accept yah back without no quams.

Changing ISP's where I live costs money(hookup charges).I'd take Shawners advice,it's more practical.

Oh yes by all means please do take er advice I was just providing a possible theory on why it may be the way it is a current... Possibly delayed persicution.

I suggest that you and everyone else downloads and distributes freely over any network possible and it dont hurt to use private either and you're better judgement it lowers the risk factor. but I do believe that private bt is a semi security blanket it could easily be craked down on just like the rest. And if there monitoring I doubt its for something to watch while they drink soda and eat popcorn. (Its not for no appearent reason at all)

But yes good judgement can save you're rear mighty good advice indeed.

Shame that they charge a hookup fee... Oddly I suppose hookup fees are everywhere but... So is the choice of an ISP and the choice on what someone wishes to do aka opinon.

Enjoy and good to see you're still around great one.

Ha!

The thought is not as cleaver as it seems though I agree with that cause most people are too ignorant to secure there wireless connection, and really should not be held accountable for such things even though they are obviously as I've come across quite a few people who talk about linking up to others connections from an automobile even...

Not to mention WEP-128 is and has been proven to be a walk in the park to crack for any ameture with a lil time.

Accountability we are not really at the stage in internet infastructure to ensure the person being held accountable should be at fault there is a big security issue in the internet alone any expirenced hacker could smoothly use you're PC for hosting files really... Or possibly even a proxy for themselves.

Government dont have enough knowladgeable people working in the court system to truely convict someone.

Any RIAA or MPAA or fed could if they wanted to just sniff out an IP on a network trace it and make up a phoney log of what the person was downloading and you'd be smacked with harrisment at the very least by them from you're ISP and the kicker is if you have encrypted files they consider that proof enough or if you wiped you're hdd clean good enough for them as well.

The trouble is in the system to prove guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

I have a new problem, I was given a DVD writer as a birthday present and don't know how to convert my vcd files to DVD or how to download DVD's (legally, ofcourse).
