Hey I'm new here as well as to bit torrents so please forgive if this is idiotic but are their increased risks associated with uploading large amounts of data? i.e. am I more likely to get caught if i take advantage of my large uploade rate? I know that there are definite risks but is it worth it to allow my software to upload hundreds of GBs or am i taking a stupid risk?

depends on what your uploading if its mpaa/riaa shit then yeah seeding for hours on end will increase the rist of getting caught.

some people will come here and tell you to join a "private"* torrent site and you will have 0% risk of getting caught but these people are wrong.

*These sites are not private, anyone can come on a forum and get a invite I think we should rename them sign-up sites because thats all they are.

Your risk is alot LESS then a public site. I MEAN SLIM To none. I rather have some site closed off from 100-1000 bots in putting fakes, accessing, logging ip address, and checking the films that are uploaded and sending DMCA letters to the site for them to lock it away.
Most private sites dont allow you to upload your own stuff, very few do.
The ones who do may have away to make your username not appear on the torrent you created and uploaded, and will hide your stats from other users. Which you can find a proxy to seed through with your torrent client if you feel like you must as well as encrypt your file if your having bt throttled and use peerguardian for extra measure.
Uploading a movie on BT that is private is the best way to do it.
I upload a 4.3 gig movie, i think i uploaded close to 120 percent of it. Created 10 seeders and 8 leechers. Took nearly 3 days to do it with a 50kbs upload rate.. Then I jumped off the torrent and left it for people to seed. I must of uploaded 400-500 torrents, and alot of the people that use bt, such like spooky or mels smiley never did so much for a file sharing community. I doubt they even know how to make a torrent to upload it, and if they did. It would be some indie stuff you could find just by using google.
Now as spooky doesnt mention or give you any info on doing is that.(Sorry spooky, your in the way of evolution and being helpful) uTorrent can make the torrent and make yourself the tracker it announces to. And you pass the torrent to friends and they all connect on and download from you. IF you dont want to use a public site or private one. Just let your friends know that they shouldnt upload the torrent to any other site and be for there own need.

Most private sites may get 15-122 interest in a movie depending if its a scene rip (Pre released). Some personal rips be snaggged 8 times.. Do you think that the 8 people out of 20,000 in the community may be MPAA or such? Plus if you sign up, and dont use your account in 3 days-7 days, some sites will delete the account so to not have lurkers, or may have to have you upload over 50 gigs so you can see or access other files. People are pretty smart to not give invites out to people who just joined the site and give them to older members. I personally dont care about which site you upload it, or share with your friends in a private network you create. But dont do it on torrentspy, piratebay, or any others like that. If you go to slyck.com, you will see people posting about their ISP cutting them off, getting cease and desist letters. People who recommend public sites would suggest to you not to download films as they know they are a trap themselfs. And the choices they are giving you is to step away from bt all together, not safe on private, not safe on public. Private sites are the better choice.

ahh fish to the bait.

you don't have any proof of that.

also.
I must of uploaded 400-500 torrents, and alot of the people that use bt, such like spooky or mels smiley never did so much for a file sharing community.

I do something MUCH better I share intresting music and intresting films non of that riaa mpaa shit you crave and hord so much of and even pay for though newsgroups just because you need the new mpaa movie so fast.

ZOMG!! FANTASTIC.4.2.SUPER.CRAPPY.CAM.NO.SOUND.HALF.OF.SC REEN!!!1.PRE.RELEASE!!

totally awesome!

the bt sites I use are pretty small and the riaa/mpaa don't give a poo about us because were nt intrested in anything they have.

the people on these sites love music they buy cd's just like me to suport the bands ALL of the torrents are made by your avrage person ripped from there own cd's I know you think only the big boys from "the scene" can rip a cd but trust me its quite easy.

I upload all the cd's I buy because I think its nice to listen to them before buying them in my opinion thats what p2p use to be about now its just greed people hording everything they can.

To be honest I don't care what you use or download but its annoying when your sticking it in peoples faces always with the screenshots of what you have just downloaded and giving new people a very false sence of security.

sorry for my long rant im very warm and iratated please god don't reply with yet more .nfos and screenshots of your latest xvids....please

Hey shawners is just trying to make a point about the risks involved in private vs public trackers, I appreciated his posts, unlike yours. I guess i am one of those greedy people that enjoys watching his mpaa movies before i buy them.

He is telling you that using sign up torrent sites is safer than than public ones which he has no proof of.

If you upload gigs and gigs of mpaa movies especially pre release ones then you are going to get noticed either by fbi/mpaa ect or your isp.

read soulxtc's link

also don't be so unappreciative ^_________^*

Hmmm... well unless the private sites I am a member of erase all user history right before a raid, then what I have upped will be right there... what files, what size, etc....

It is the very things that make the private sites "good" that make them just as, if not more, dangerous than the public sites.

However... since they usually just shut private sites down (which ends up being easy) the risk involved with getting caught and given notice or sued on a public tracker (which go down, and 10 new ones pop up) is higher.

Your risk is alot LESS then a public site. I MEAN SLIM To none.

I still don't understand why it's any safer. I don't think the RIAA or MPAA care about a username on site they care about the files.

What prevents the RIAA and its minions from downloading the file from you and directly getting your IP address? If you are uploading a file you "are" visible. Bittorent does nothing to mask your IP and in fact broadcasts via the torrent. I find it hard believe the RIAA cannot get on a private site and I'm sure they're already there in mass on every popular private site. The torrent is a direct link to you. If the site changes the torrent it will effectively mask only the original seeder everyone thereafter will be downloading and hence uploading with their IP's fully visible to every other concurrent client with access to the torrent regardless if the information contained in the torrent is altered.

If my logic is incorrect please explain?

shawners you know the MPAA and FBI are Power Users at Torrentbytes and Filelist etc... If I could get in without really knowing anyone then so could they.

Elitetorrents was private and the FBI was all over that mess to make a point. The same thing can happen at OiNK too. We've seen UK Torrents, Torrentit, and CrazeyMazeys (all private) all close down due to legal pressure, you should not EVER feel 100% safe on a private site. It's obvious...

Just keep your ratio ~1.1 to keep up your membership in private sites. Don't try to be a hero and go for the 10:1 ratio. You'll be the next taget and be labeled as an "egregious" uploader. Try to blend in with the crowd...

Shit on public torrents there's no incentive for me to push up a crazy ratio. I rarely even seed to 75% on a public tracker... it's cuz I don't care and the longer I hang out in the swarm the longer I'm a sitting duck.
