SYDNEY (AFP) - Trees could be growing in the Antarctic within a century because of global warming, an international scientific conference heard.

With carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere set to double in the next 100 years, the icy continent could revert to how it looked about 40 million years ago, said Professor Robert Dunbar of Stanford University.

"It was warm and there were bushes and there were trees," he told some 850 delegates in the Tasmanian capital Hobart, the national AAP news agency reported.

mad as.... but if the carbon di-oxide levels double ... wont we be dead or breathing man made oxygen any way ??

We breathe 78% nitrogen, 20.9% oxygen, 0.9% argon as it is with no problem... CO2 makes up a negligable amount of total air makeup as it is (~0.03%), even if it was to quadruple I dont think we'd have any problem breathing.

Hopefully the new flora growing will just eat up all the CO2 and balance us out.

The Antarctic will probably be underwater in a hundred years time.

It should come as no surprise that Antarctica will grow wood.

They don't call it the South Pole for nothing.

I like trees. Vacationing in Antartica instead of Florida. Wouldn't that be a sight.

Alberta has girlie-man winters.

Try moving east 400 miles. Or Manitoba.
