:mellow Just a question, a friend of mine had a 40 gig fujitsu die on him, and the tec told him a chip was cooked on the board. No big deal as it is under warrenty, and I can replace all he lost. The tec said it was a virus, and that sounded strange to me. As I also have the same drive, I was wondering if this was a common problem with them, to have a chip burn up. Thanks in advance.

I have heard people claim that before too. I've never had one person who had that actually happen. Maybe some techs just know it's screwed and didn't bother to find out why because it's obvious it's buggered. At that point, you might as well tell the people something.

From what I've read....there newer drives are pretty good on the MTBF rate....but it does seem like there trying to cover there asses.... ok will replace your drive...BUT we refuse to put it in writing. Eh, I'll stick to maxtor...an yea that shit the tech said....just sounds retarded.....sort of reminds me of TBOFH.....
"The earths magnetic field is strong today....stick all your HD's an floppys in a pillow case an toss a few magnets in....that should protect them....."

The reason this was asked was that I am pondering a new drive, I was going to use the 40 fuj as a c drive. With the problems, I might just keep it as a d drive as I always back up my files anyway. If it crashes no prob, and I will just get a better drive for my c. Thanks for the help!

Remember not too long ago, when Will Rae bought a Quiet Kit for his drives ? The first thing to my mind was KEEP THEM COOL.. My infrared thermometer says my HD chips are 140 +,
and my whole system stays around than 80 degrees.
. My sys is at 71F so in other words if it working leave it alone. The drives are working well so far so As i back everything up I am not going to worry a lot. PS we all back up the good stuff dont we ? As I found out from my friend we dont back up enough files. He is just lucky I have all his programs saved.

My HD's have there own fan.....they didn't get hot in the first place but I had this old small fan that hooks in between a normal power supply line an i said what the hell.....it's rigged up in a pollock fashion but it does drop the temps like a degree or 2 so I'll leave it....doesn't add any noise so why remove it, right?
Anyone have any shit on Seagate or Maxtor? This one 10gb Seagate I have.....is a major work horse....hasn't failed yet an I've had it running 24/7 in hot ass weather with no AC on an it stayed cool.....the Maxtors I use get a tad warm but nothing that crazy....
Diamond Max non-formfactor drives SUCK though...spread the word they get hot as all hell FAST - within 20 minutes there majorly hot.....

:shy My 40 is in bay that has a fan also, it is just his luck I set both machines up that, i can dump our drives back and forth and his kid can still use the comp with just c drive. You wont believe this but a friend has his set up that when you remove d the damm comp wont boot, and he wont let me change it .

i had a maxtor 120 fail--they gave me a 160 to replace it, for no extra--you've gotta love that
from the 30-60% failure rates i read about @ the register about fujitsu, i'd never EVER get one of those, i hear IBM's big drives are trash too, especially in "abusive environments"
i run my computer as a server 24/7, so that's pretty abusive--peak internal temps 96-104 degrees (average of 85)

What's his reason? An how does he do it? Set the D as the only temp drive so windoze wigs out?

:mellow It would seem that fujitsu have gone down the tubes as
my c is a old 8.4 gig and works fine, but like the man says it dont hurt to ask. It might be a good idea to keep this thread going to ask questions about motherboards, cases, and so on.
You know, like what power supplies are underated, and so on.
It would give us all a place to see what worked for you? If Krell ever gets that p4 done he could do one on overclocking. He is going to kill me.

From what I've heard the 20gb 40gb 60gb incarnations of certain IBM drive models....crash HARD either the head's hit the platters or the head controller chip wigges out...(doesn't cook like the drive mentioned already) but it does go whacky LOL I have a 40gb IBM deskstar laying around....I'll work it for a few days an give you the results.
Yes I would advise a back up....no matter what drive you use it's always good to back up once or twice a month...or week LOL How long would it take to back up 3 or 4 CD's worth of shit you just downloaded? Not long....an it's less of a headache if your system does tank.
Don't worry about it though just scan the drive once an awhile an put your ear to it to see if it sounds funky.... the latter sounds fucking stupid I know....but it has saved my ass in the past...I heard the drive making odd sounds I've never heard before an backed up like a crazy man; bout a week later it crashed the heads hit pretty damn hard too......LOL
