The most common ones that I can think of are AutoCad and Solid Edge.
Both really expensive!

I agree with the AutoCAD, it's great once you have all the commands sussed.

It depends how technical you want to get.
You could get by with Rhino 3D which is a pretty good NURBS surface modeler.
And even Maya or 3DS Max will work.
And your skills in these software can carry on not just into the design world, but also the video, film, and video game worlds.
If you want to get technical and be into the manufacturing world, there is always Pro Engineer, and Autodesk Inventor(Which with AutoCad, as mentioned above, will give you not only 2D but 3D design capabilities.)

pro/ENGINEER is nice, it will let you design the parts AND physically model stress as various forces act on each part

Ive seen 3000 dollar plus cad programs on Emule. Its about the only place I know to get such programs.
EDIT: I take that back, I did a little search and there are other "places" too. Its just been a long time since Ive looked for such a thing
