View Full Version : BIOS Trouble?

I was given a GA-7ZX MB with a 1.3 MHz chip, so I decided to give it a home. I found the manual online for it and plugged in the basics: 80 gig WD/HD (new), 256 mb/ram, 32 mb/graphics/ 300 watt/PS, DVD all-in-one.

It fires up into the bios just fine, where it does in fact see the HD and other hardware. I set the bios to fail-safe defaults and then to optimum defaults...and then after that failed, I tried setting it manually. I manually went through each setting to see what I may have missed. I am now at a loss. I can install windows on a new C:\ partition up to where it reaches 100% of the format, but the next step when setup gets to 11% (drivers.cab) it hangs and then gives a BSOD. I did google the error #, but to no avail.

I wonder if I have missed something or is it just hooped?

I am about to smash this mobo to little pieces.

Any suggestions? I don't mean on how to smash it to little pieces either.

Try a different source CD. Try a different CD drive.

Thanks for the advice, but I have tried this already. I pulled my brand new drive from my new desktop, which I know works.

I have even flashed the bios with the most recent update. The funny thing is I had an old HD with win98 installed on it and when I tried that drive it actually booted to it, so is the mobo hooped or not? It booted to my old 98 drive, but I can't seem to get XP installed on a brand new drive??????????????????????

Windows xp disc may be scratched or need a better source. Try reburning xp to another disc and tell us what happens next.. OS is very finicky if the disc is damaged.

Okay, well I have tested the 300 watt power supply and it works. As for XP, it's a brand new disk (legal), so I'm at a loss.

This may sound strange and totally wacky but I had this problem once before and it ended up being the freaking keyboard that was causing the error. Maybe try another KB and see if it gets past this. ITs worth a shot I guess but somehow I don't think it will help

Hope it works! In my case I was trying to use a compaq KB on a newly built PC. It would work up until a point then for some reason windows would stop seeing the KB and crap out on me. Its been awhile since this happened so I can't remember much details other than running to Wal-mart at 3 am and buying a 7 dollar KB after I noticed the lights on the KB went dead at that point. Good luck

You may also try taking out any devices, plug and play, that you have

I didn't read very hard, so this might have already been mentioned:

Run a memory test, such as memtest86 (http://www.memtest86.com).

well it wouldn't be the best of ways but as a last resort it might not look so bad if all else fails

I did do that to simply test the drive. I will reformat it on the problem puter, if i get that far.

Sorry, but I have not had any time to work on this problem, lately, so no updates. I will test the memory, but i am pretty sure it is good.
