I am trying to copy files from a 40 gig maxtor drive to a80 gig westen digital drive. Can any one tell me a good program to use. I have gotten errors using norton 2003 ghost, XML Drive image, windows backup, WD life guard tool, and HD clone 3.1.

Errors don't happen like that in so many programs for no reason. What were the error messages.

Also, I believe transferring from a Maxtor to Western Digital can cause problems. Let me Google.

Do you have Partition Magic? Which version of Windows OS? Is the new drive attched to the same computer or it's on another computer?

Don't you just cut and paste?

I never knew there was such a problem...and I have used various drives for years.

Copy & pasting can be very slow if you're copying a lot of files from drive to drive. I believe, imho, ghosting would be somewhat faster. However, if you're getting errors, I might re-think my strategy.

Have you tried symantec's site for answers?

Posting the errors and stating whether the the drive is internal/external or if it is in a separate comp would help. Being a SATA vs. an ATA drive may be a factor also, considering the cabling/motherboard.

Thanks everyone for your helpful tips. But I found a solution. I ran the Wester Digital Lifeguard under windows XP environment and it worked fine. I can now boot from the new drive. All programs work and all user setting and files were retained.
