I am not a computer genius, nor am i able to configure anything unless there are some instructions. that why i'm here and asking to see if any of you smart ones know how to do this.
So here is what i want to do:
1) I want ppl to be able to download things from a folder off my HD. By clicking on a link.
2) I need to know which program. Does CuteFTP work?
3) a good site or person to tell me how to do it. STEP by STEP.
4) security....which program or setting is most secure.
Thanks in advance!

So CuteFTP is the wrong program?
CuteFTP is a FTP client. So yes, it is the wrong program. The only thing it's good for is to connect to a FTP site.
You're on the right track looking for a server. One I can recommend is the FileZilla Server (http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla).
Now for setting the server and the web site link up, you need to give us more info.
Where is the site located that will have the link?
Is your home PC that will run the FTP server always online?
And, do you have a static or dynamic IP address?

Anywhere, lets say i have a program i want to share with you. I want to make a link that will directly take it from my HD.
Possible?
Is your home PC that will run the FTP server always online?
No I run a 3mb(dl) 1.5mb(ul) ADSL which can disconnet and reconnect anytime i want on a random IP address.
And, do you have a static or dynamic IP address?
Pin a note on me and call me stupid. Whats a static?!?! or dynamic?!?!? IP address.

thanx a lot, i hope i can get this going soon :gj
Almost forgot! I want to stick with Serv-U for now cause i got it registered and all. If i have to i will switch to FileZilla.:wings

by clicking on a link?
use a webserver, 24link is easy. Get it HERE (http://filedudes.cablelan.net/win95/webser/files/24link.exe) With 24link u can just default to a folder and it will list the files on folder for d/l. There is a newer version of 24link, but I have not used it so i cant vouch for it.
Abyss web server is stable, small and free, but abyss is a little more complicated. But it supports resume, as 24link doesnt. Get Abyss HERE (http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/)
As far as your ip changing. go to http://no-ip.com and get a FREE redirect, also get the FREE prog that wil automatically update your ip to whatever is your current ip. That can be found HERE (http://www.no-ip.com/downloads.php)
BTW I host my site with Abyss http://vladd44.com , its a full web server.

thanks for the links yours seems to be the easiest way which i will try if the Chris Mydens tips with Bullet Proof FTP don't work!
Thanks all!
BTW if more ppl want to give suggestions just post it, i want to learn more about FTP's and servers e.g. security, ports, linking etc.
It will probably help more ppl than just me!

I'm messin around with IIS, which is built into WinXp.
Then I'll build a Web Server with password access, so I can trade with people here on ZP.

I'd love to try your group. But I think ZP is really stimulating. (It's that or the coffee anyway), if I try another zarjaz site, I fear my head may pop off.

DynDNS (http://dyndns.org) has a very functional redirection service, both for static and dynamic IPs, as well as webhop redirection for hosted sites with URLs that are too long.
Hope that helps!

LOL. Don't forget to read the new security advisorys at least weekly. Why not just paint a target on the side of your computer?
