Just the other night I got a phone call from the computer crimes division of the law saying that they were aware of my file-sharing of copyrighted material and to cease and desist or face court. The officer I spoke to said they had gotten my online history from my ISP (iiNet) which really pissed me off. I was wondering if anyone else has had experiences with this. I suppose I've got a ratio of 1.33 (60gb down 90gb up) on demonoid and do sharing on other torrents as well such as thepiratebay and torrentspy.
Just wondering what people reckon I should do re continuing to share or find other means to share.
BTW about 99% of my sharing is through bittorrent and I live in australia

Firstly, change your ISP to one that doesn't just hand out its users confidential information. Then move to France.

I don't know about Australia laws regarding civil & copyrights, but I would probably stop using BitTorrent for a while then change ISP if I could! Since your ISP is giving out your information freely without court order. I would think, there's privacy law in your country too.

I kind of blame the people here on ZP and other forums alike that dont tell you the truth in filesharing. People will tell you to use public sites, and stay away from private sites. Since they themselfs dont trust private sites. You got a cease and desist warning which by LAW, the ISP must hand out information regarding this. Some get e-mail, first time i heard of someone calling you. DONT DOWNLOAD FROM PUBLIC torrent sites. People are incredible asses that tell you otherwise, and if people use public torrent places like piratebay, they themselfs dont infringe on nearly half the stuff out there. If you didnt stop sharing it, then you have problems. Your ISP will cut you off or they may go further as legal action. Narrow it down, find out what file they want you to stop sharing, and then remember where you got it from. It could be easy as knowing what to stay away from. Continue what your doing since the outside force cant monitor your habits, they just use their pc to connect to you and look at the people downloading/uploading, and send out warnings to everyone. THey may hand it off to legal departments in other countries, or a firm that is hired by MPAA/RIAA/BSA may handle the calll to you.

Shawners, he got a call from computer crimes div. of police not from his ISP. The C&D is probably not negotiatable in this case!

Yeah I"m not too sure what the law is here in Australia but I'm wondering what the deciding factor was to come after me? Most instances I've heard about involve the law contacting the ISP and the ISP contacting the customer, rather than in this case where the cops contacted me directly. I never heard any warning from my ISP.

What I'd like to know though is if there's any bt or other file sharing network proggys that scramble/encrypt the data so that as it goes through the ISP they're unable to establish what's passing through?
RE: Auggie why would I want to move to France?? That would involve learning french, I'm too lazy for that, as well as the fact I like Australia all the Kangaroos you can boink.

Why not just build a cantenna (http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/cantennahowto.html) and use other people's unsecured wireless connection? Public or private sites are just as safe that way; and I still haven't seen the police storm into my neighbours house... yet :P
EDIT: Just saw your edit, funny as fuck!

Haha I never intended to be serious about the whole France move - they recently legalised P2P.
Now open your front door, go over to your friend and beat the living shit out of him =)
