Changes made to my computer - Fresh reinstall of my factory Toshiba software (XP Home Edition)
Problem - Every now and again, say periodically 2-3 minutes my fan dies down to practically sounding off and my mouse and keyboard, my system basically seases to function at all for a second without turning off. As I'm typing the keyboard doesn't type and the mouse doesn't move, its really strange and getting quiet annoying. I've done a fresh restore plenty of times with these Toshiba CD's and everything was grand.
The only other difference is that the hard drive is a new 60GB (was a 30GB) but its perfect, I already had XP Pro installed on it. Any suggestions on what the problem could be would be great, and it only happened after I done the fresh restore, my bios settings haven't been changed but I will have another look just in case.
Thanks!

Thanks Hunter but thats not the type of problem I have. The system doesn't react to the peripherals for a second and then it works again and its only when the fan dies down for a second. Its not a major problem but just really annoying.

I googled my ass off, but couldnt find the answer. Anyway Im suspecting that a setting was changed in the bios, or is it possible that the temp sensing wire was bumped when changing the drive? It sounds like the cpu fan is not reading the temp properly, causing it to slow down, and lock things up.

Well I defaulted the BIOS settings (even though they looked ok) and restart the computer and I'm glad to say, things seem ok at the moment, no sudden lapses at all. I wonder what setting could have caused that?

Im not sure, but it sounded like something in xp home didnt like the 60 gig drive, at the settings it was running.

If he only upgraded to 60GB it's a laptop.I'm not saying you can't get a bigger power supply in there though.

Maybe it was all those missing password astericks you had mucking up your system.

I dont think its a supply problem, as it ran fine with xo pro before. It just needed some tinkering with the bios. Anyway we shall know soon enough if it keeps running fine, or not.

Turn off ACPI in the BIOS, and right click the Desktop > Properties > Screen Saver = OFF
Power Monitor = Always on, Never Never Never
Turn off Hibernation
You could have emailed me you know :D

I'll remember that next time Krell =) ACPI is off, I never use a screen saver and hibernation is also off.
And damn those astericks pooter, damn them to hell LOL!
Can you actually change a power supply for a laptop? I've never heard of that before.

Right, it's sort of happening again but I have a theory is the GAIM program. I used it before with no worries but this time I have MSN active in it. That's all I can think of at the moment.

Killed GAIM and it didn't repeat itself, out of pure curiousity I restarted GAIM and it still didn't happen.
What is it with me and the weirdest fecking problems on my puter?

I wonder if there is an ongoing problem with toshiba notebooks and their fans. My friend has had so much trouble with his, he's taking into a shop for repairs. His fan does not work very well either. The computer over heats so badly it just shuts down. It's only a year and a bit since he bought it. They should perform better than that, shouldn't they?

Really, thats interesting. My fan has been fairly active lately, even just playing a Java game on the net will boost the fan up to full whack. I've had this laptop for about 2 years or so, maybe a new fan is in order.
