Computer problem.. suggestions?

I'm getting strange clusters of short vertical and horizontal lins on my display when booting up and playing DVDs. Regular Windows environment apps and games are not affected.

I've tried changing monitor cables (even cable types: DVI and Dsub) but the problem remains. The monitor is probably fine... I just have a feeling... won't be able to test with another one until later.

I'm leaning toward my GFX card pooping out on me, but if anyone knows of this problem and has a quick fix I'd sure appreciate the peace of mind.

what are you using to play DVDs? and have you tried another program such as VLC?

Your GFX card might be dying...I had that happen a couple of times...
Just to make sure though, you should try another monitor.

Make sure your monitor isn't near any other electronics/appliances *tvs, microwaves, large bundles of active electrical cords, etc.... It isn't a great idea to have your box near them either*. Try lowering the resolution and refresh rate *if this helps, it's probably your monitor that's about to die*. Last thing, try a different monitor. If this doesn't work, move on to checking out the video card. Completely remove and reinstall the driver, make sure your card is snug in its slot *best way to make sure here is to simply take it out and put it back in*... also, if you've installed any new hardware in your box recently, it would be a good idea to remove it temporarily to make sure your video card isn't being starved for juice.

One last thought... since it's been warmer weather, your vid card might be having heat problems, so also make sure it's getting air. :)

it is definitely a software issue since it affects DVDs and nothing else<br><Br>switch to VLC or some other DVD software.

if the problem happens in any accelerated video playback your video card either needs new drivers or needs to be replaced.

if you know how to disable hardware acceleration for DVD playback that would help rule out or prove a problem with the video card

Weird. It fixed itself. All I did was curse God and it started working correctly.
