Burning .avi files to cd?

Hi itrying to burn my tv shows to cdr. These files are in .avi format.

Now i have Nero and going to create a vcd and after selecting the file it says " unsupported file format" now is there a way around this please?

Windows Xp, And Nero 6 ultra.

And it's done this on about 15 files (all about 400-700kb) so cannot be one file, also all work when played via vlc player.

You cant do it. AVI files are probably xvid, which a standalone dvd player that can play xvid files are out there. But your dvd player may play VCD, in which needs to be converted to a VCD format. So what you do is open up nero express and choose to make avi files into svcd or vcd file format. Drag and drop them and it has to be converted to vcd. Some dvd players only play dvd and vcd/svcd. I would use nero express to turn the avi files to DVD format if there a collection of favorite shows, but do you have a DVD BURNER? Or cd burner?

I've opened Nero Express

choosen:-
Videos/Pictures
Video Cd
Then browse files
picked the file i want to burn (avi file) and it then states file format not supported, so how do i get around this please?

My dvd player does play vcd and loads of other formats aswell.

Let me see about finding you a guide.. It has to be converted to vcd format. Your dvd player doesnt play xvid does it? I would upgrade to nero 7 and get the full package of it. And ill try to walk you through it.

You'll need mpeg plug-ins for Nero 6 Ultra, if you are using multi-network p2p client, you'll find it. Otherwise, it's not free!

Update to nero 7.Premium, can be found on any p2p network. Select Smart start where a MENU comes up.
Go over to PHOTO and VIDEO. Select Make VCD(Video CD). After that another box comes up with the size of disc space on the bottom. You click on add video. You select your video file that you have over to it. It will go down to the size needed to fit on disc. And you can select more, and click on more options to adjust byte rate.

If your stand alone play all kinds of files then it probably plays XviD and DivX......if so then just burn it as a data file and the player should play it.

Thats right.
A VideoCD is not just a CD with a video on it, its a encoded-to-spec .mpeg movie on a CD that is formated to spec as well. The reason its not letting you drag that file in there is probably because its not a file that can nativly run of a VideoCD disc. Avis are defenetely not mpegs, so thats probably why thats not working.

If your player can play DIVX avis then you should be able to put one on a Data CD.

If you still go the VideoCD route, which I wouldnt since from my experience, its not as good as DIVX, then you need to convert your AVIs to mpegs(which will further reduce quality) and then you should be able to throw them on the VideoCD.
