Just reinstalled windows from an acronis image. I'm using VLC media player and trying to play WMV files but it just plays the audio. No video what gives. It worked before.

Probably some codecs are missing!

I installed the K-Lite Mega Codec pack and still no dice.

I don't play or keep WMV files much, have you tried convert the file to AVI format to see that will play?

Has to be some sort of setting since VLC doesnt need any codecs to decompress video. Thats the whole point of VLC, skipping all those messy codec packs. I would download a fresh version of VLC and re instal it

Just did. Installed version 0.8.4a and it still only plays the audio. I've enabled the video channel still nothing. Any other thoughts.

DId this same file play on VLC? Some WMV content will not play on VLC, blame MS for trying to stop a good product, there is no reason I can think of that it would not play other than that. Unless your HD is a mess which I don't think is the case.

It's played fine before all the ones I have tried have played fine. My HD should be pretty good being a fresh install. I'm not sure what else todo. I really don't want to have to install WMP

I'd grab media player classic. Its my favorite and its always good to have as a stand by. It will be good to try it out and see if something else has caused a problem with VLC's decompression process, which is what I suspect

I agree, i got MPC through the ace mega codecs pack. i downloaded a cam and i couldn't get it to play on any player, once i installed the pack, MPC played the file fine.

When trying to play the files in MPC I get "cannot render file" or something to that affect.

Bad news. When its a codec problem MPC will generate a error message and tell you a bunch of mumbo jumbo for the problem.

Like this

It will usually then try to decompress the file itself and play it anyway.

The only time I have seen the "can not render file" message is when the video stream itself is broken. Im 95% sure that the video in question has a broken video stream or rather, Its missing a large chunk of data or perhaps all video data. I don't know what happened to it between the time you were playing it and now but I feel safe in saying its now garbage. Sorry

from the vlc wiki (http://wiki.videolan.org/index.php/WMV):

WMV3, the Video part of Windows Media 9, is not supported in VLC. However there ase some fixes.

If you're using Windows and have Windows Media Player 9/10 installed, VLC should be able to play these files, by using Microsoft's own files. Or, if you're using Linux, see the common problems page for a workarround.

some codecs VLC can't include by default due to licensing issues. they're just a handful, but enough to keep a spare media player handy. you might want to check to make sure wmp 9/10 is installed, that could be the difference between your installs.

I may have jumped the gun a bit. Let me finish reading a bit and see what I can dig up. One question, How were these videos stored? On DVD or hard disc?

Ok heres a curveball for you. They play fine on another pc. Ok I've tried two sets of these videos. One was stored on an external hard drive then copied to my internal one after reinstalling windows. The other was stored on a cd with a back up of my website I did about a month ago. They don't play on my pc but they play on the other pc in the house.

On your new instal, you have no form of WMP installed other than classic? This was an XP mod is what Im asking

black_magiic
April 16th, 2006, 01:29 AM
Yes it is a custom install disk with no wmp. However this is an image from a previous install that worked fine. The only difference with this one is I have nVidia drivers now instead of ATI. Otherwise it's identical to my past install which played stuff fine even without wmp. Should I try reinstalling again with a custom disk that has wmp?

Im thinking the image was somehow missing something and not Indentical, maybe a prt of window that could not be imaged, I don't really know about this. I would stick with the instal, Im doing a bit of reading on this subject right now. You may want to look here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/AllDownloads.aspx?displang=en&qstechnology= and not download WMP 10 but one of the others just so you will have playback functions. It surely wont hurt. Im sure this has to be what is causing the problem and I feel bad it took this long to make the jumps in logic to figure this out.

You may want to look here http://www.click-now.net/download/Zoom_Player_WMV_Pro.htm It has some info you may need to read about video cards and such. I think this will put you on the right path. Ive heard good things about that, maybe some of the zoom player people can speak up for it.

Sorry I keep getting sidetracked, Im trying to help someone else on winmx too. I would try grabbing the latest directx and media player 9. I think thats all you need really. I would forget about zoomplyer unless ome other member recomends it. I was thinking it may help in authenticating the file but that shouldnt be a problem youre having.

Ughhh edit: I see you can't get WMP 9 anymore. Ive never upgraded to 10. Ive always feared it for some reason. Don't know why

I have lots of players. One of these usually plays everything

I believe he has more than just a player problem napho. Windows is missing something that WMV files need to decompress. MPC or VLC will not decompress any WMV files after a custom format from an image. WMV should be the one file type anyone can play with MPC. I still stand by the recomendation of installing a version of WMP since that is whats missing from your PC.
