take, for example, a big, multifile torrent well into its halflife.

Chances are some subfile(s) are complete amongst the peers. If temporarily,
say for 1 hour, all peers shared only the same subfile at a time ,
and not other subfiles, that particular subfile(s) could complete faster
for all peers. No seeds needed. Afterwitch the torrent returns to normal.

during that hour, subfile(s) could be completed quickly and watched, instead of waiting
for the whole torrent to finish.

is this sound?

Yep, that's what happens. Its best when each of the peers have all decided 'right, I want a whole episode right now' and they force their client to get one section first. Else with random segements, the scenario you describe often leaves a bunch of seeds with no more than 90% between them.

thats right. It would have to be a planned, coordinated effort on the part of the peers.
