got a software piracy notice

This morning I had just woke up and was opening a file I had started downloading last night before I went to sleep. I then downloaded a keygen in order to get it registered. Well anyways, after I put it in the program said "thanks for registering", but then I got a window from my firewall for a connection going out to a server. I was half-asleep and said "well maybe it's just checking for updates" and clicked Accept, mostly out of annoyance for the firewall window opening in the first place. Well a window popped up with a "software piracy notice", reading me back my network information and basically telling me that the incident would be investigated. In an attempt to rectify the situation I bought a license for the software, and emailed an apology to the company, but I'm not sure if it will help or not. Basically what I'm wondering is if the fact that I bought the license will help out with the situation, and if not what to expect.

Seems like it was really just a scare tactic. And if you emailed them I don't think they will really care, especially since you bought the key, thats what the warning was meant to do really...

Always be careful when using cracked programs, block all communications from them with your firewall and make sure its not calling home like this.

YOU FALLED FOR THE OLDEST scam in the world!!! I cant believe it. CANCEL your internet connection and just start buying stuff.
They cant do anything against you, IF YOUR ISP SENDS YOU A cease and desist letter.. THEN they caught you with the file. . BSA ISNT SUEING anyone or taking ip's to get you to pay up. Microsoft may do it, but other then that.. HOW DO they know you didnt type in the wrong KEY CODE?? Always put the program in your host file to block it.. What ever you install, you can disconnect from internet.. But if it calls back, it can disable your software and you have to restart it again. Thats all it does.

I'm afraid reading your network information back to you is ridiculously easy to do, I've seen my whole c drive embeded onto a webpage trying to get me to buy some 'evidence eraser' crap.

Emailing them any apoligising is admitting guilt, given them evidence if they want to sue you. Learn better next time, post your error messages HERE first before doing stuff.

Well yeah, it's a lesson learned. I've gotten a blacklist notice before, but this is the first time the information was ever passed to a server. It doesn't matter much now, I got a response from the company stating that since I bought a license the matter is closed. Oh, and Borgs, yeah I know that trick, but again I let it pass through my firewall and connect to the server (which was my own stupidity) so I had no reason to doubt that they had it. I'm a little green behind the gills when it comes to piracy (usually I carry the "well there is probably freeware somewhere out there that does the same thing" philosophy) so when I got the notice I wasn't really sure what to expect. Again, lesson learned. Anywho, thanks for the help and somewhat constructive flaming. I needed both.

Well I would COMPLETELY DISCONNECT from the net before I install ANY software that may call home. But I WOULD NOT contact a company and tell them basically that I admit to stealing their product!!

You had better be glad it was not the RIAA or MPAA....because if it was a movie or song that they caught you through your ISP with.... you'd be up a creek with no paddle. They would simply use your email you sent to them in court to get more money out of you and they would be able to do it, because you admitted to it!

The stuff i install have NFO files..Tell you if you need to disconnect, but if your unsure. Put the site in a host file and block it from dialing back. Until you see lawsuits from BSA coming up in the p2p realm. dont worry about breaking the law on it.
