Found this awesome link on the Azureus Wiki which might help anyone who is getting pinched by the higher memory usage of Azureus.

Please leave uTorrent out of it if you don't mind. I posted this to help give people some ideas for making Azureus easier on their computers, not switch clients :) I will readily admit uTorrent is much lighter, but I love having all the plugins and graphics and options you can get on Azureus, thats just my personal taste :)

You can close it if you want, however I would prefer to leave it open so people can comment on the effectiveness/ask questions about the process. If it starts going downhill just go ahead and close it though.

Thanks for your guide.. The only drawback with AZ was the resource thingy. Now only if some of them sites would start allowing the usage of AZ again! :)

It sounds like sites banned Azureus, I never heard that, why did they do it? I can see it if it is hogging resources, and there are supposed to be versions of it modified for cheating out there.

Generally I find that sites RECOMMEND Azureus and uTorrent as the two top clients... However I still don't understand how a crappy client is so popular. That thing eats your computer alive!

Hello ccc1005,
Thats a nice find. I just signed up here and checking things out. I have found Azureus to use a lot of resources yes, but that IS because of its features. I have already trimmed down some plugins and saw a difference. The post you shared I hadn't seen before and it must be recent because they mention the latest JAVA. I am using the Zudeo/Azureus 3.0 beta version and it also uses less resources. So that was a good move.
BTW, I have tried uTorrent and do use it occassionaly, but it just dont give the info I want to perform the tasks I want. Azureus got it and it works well for me.
Yes there are few sites that have banned azureus because of a hack thats available. BUT there is also a way to tell the hack is being used, so it IS their ignorance that makes that ban. Enough babble. Be back after more tweaking
Thanks again

You should also note that this step:
create a link that calls Azureus.exe -J-Xmx64m to launch Azureus with a JVM heap size that's restricted to 64MB
Can be modified, if you want to throttle down even more. I've managed to launch Azureus into just 32MB of heap (by changing that 64 to a 32). I can't say how this would work for use with the full GUI, but for running it in headless mode with the console UI plugin on a VPS with limited memory, it worked wonders. Would be worth a try if you're trying to slim Azureus down even more.

What does this do if you are leeching and especially seeding lots of torrents? I.e. 100+ or even 200+
I'm running 2.5.0.4 right now and the most I have seen it use is about 170MB. I don't want to make changes if stability gets affected by it. I haven't tried version 3 because some sites I use don't allow it.

I use uTorrent on my "main" pc, that serves as my workstation, due to the lower resource useage.
On my Windows 2003 server, where I do my tracking, I run Azureus, because uTorrent doesn't have much in the way of tracking features.

To any other azureus users struggling with CPU usage, I highly recommend switching to utorrent 1.61
I did it a few weeks ago and it feels like i have a new pc :)
(Previously i had always been loyal to azureus, but i guess i couldn't be bothered "learning" a new client - turns out utorrent is super simple but still has all the relatively advanced features that i liked in azureus)
Link to best version (1.61 is older but free of any affiliation to RIAA which) can be found at oldversion dot com or filehippo :)

NONSENSE
utter rubbish, the new versions are not in any way associated with the RIAA
Most BT sites now REQUIRE you to have the latest version 1.7.7

February 9th, 2008, 08:42 PM
OK, so perhaps there's no need for 1.61 (although i have come across many many people who prefer it). I for one DO feel more comfortable using a utorrent client that was created before the RIAA jumped into bed with them, but I'm sure you are right that this makes no practical difference whatsoever.
Anyway, just wanted to share my experience of the switch to utorrent providing a very noticeable improvement in CPU usage and general PC speed. :)

yup there is nothing wrong with utorrent, it is light and it has loads of features, rss is all i need.
with 1.6.1 and 1.7.7 i found that the newer version allow the torrents to go alot quicker, i could only download about 6mbs with 1.6.1 version and now i download at 10-11mbs with the 1.7.7 version
just my two cents abouat the versions

I think the best part of this was showing how to change it to the classic interface, I've been wanting to do that since I got the latest version.

As I type this Azureus, running with 16 active torrents uses a whooping 94.212 K and 0 CPU
I have 2 gig of ram and I hardly notice any difference with UT running, even tho it uses about 30 K less
back in the days, when 512 K of RAM was considered to be kick ass, it might have been a problem, but nowadays the memory hog argument is rather obsolete imo
if you prefere UT to AZ, fine - it's your choice, but the fact is , UT is closed source, developed by people on the bittorrent inc payrol which in part has a deal (read: financed) by the M*P*A*A
Exert from the Privacy statement from utorrent:
....owned and operated by BitTorrent, Inc., its affiliates and subsidiaries.
for a list of current partners check this link http://www.bittorrent.com/company/partners/
so if you feel comfortable to use a client that is associated with 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, MGM, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., Trymedia, a division of Macrovision etc.. - by all means, go ahead
BitTorrent and MPAA Join Forces

Thomas Mennecke
As Slyck.com reported yesterday, Bram Cohen, founder of BitTorrent, and Dan Glickman, president of the MPAA, made an announcement today regarding the future of both organizations. The MPAA and Bram Cohen revealed during the press conference the two will work together to inhibit piracy.

All this info is published all over the net and confirmed to be true.

Yeah, not bad. Helps with Vuze.
Well, I started with Vuze, then Utorrent, then Vuze and I'm on uTorrent again, since there seems to be more guides on the internet about utorrent.
But trust me, Vuze is awesome. If your new, try Vuze.
