My windows firewall is messed up man!

I use XP home... does this even have group policy? ... yes I am admin, the only acct on the computer.
I thought I'd had it on for a while. I just noticed this :(

Any ideas? I'm almost sure I have no viruses or spyware but I'm leaving housecall scanning over night as well as spybot recently updated.

Ok I tried to login as "Administrator" with no password... and it told me I am unable to logon because of an account restriction.

About time for a reinstall, you think?

To clear local Group Policy settings for the Windows Firewall, use the Local Computer Policy snap-in and set all the settings in Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Network\Network Connections\Windows Firewall and in the Domain Profile and Standard Profile folders to Not Configured.


Also try this:

1. Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe
2. Navigate to the following locations:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ WindowsFirewall

-and-

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ WindowsFirewall

3. Backup and then delete the WindowsFirewall key.

4. Close Regedit.exe and restart Windows.

or this:

Type firewall.cpl in Start, Run dialog.
Click the Advanced tab.
Click the Restore Defaults button.
Click Yes to continue when you see this dialogRestoring the default settings will delete all settings of Windows Firewall that you have made since Windows was installed. This may cause some programs to stop working.

Do you want to continue?

The Windows Firewall is now turned ON, and set to factory default state.

Alternately, you can use the NETSH command-line to accomplish this:
Open a Command Prompt window and type NETSH FIREWALL RESET

It's not much of a problem for me to reinstall and reconfigure some programs...
those things you posted krell, did not work. I'd found that same thing through google and tried.

Thank God I also kept a copy of it on another hard drive.

Your password is blank right?

If it is, that could be a cause of your problem and you may either have to change it to something or change the key using regedit.

Download sharedaccess.reg (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/reg/sharedaccess.reg) (only for systems running Windows XP Service Pack 2) and save to Desktop. Then double-click the file to merge the contents to the registry. The Services entry will be created. Restart Windows (mandatory step, otherwise the following NETSH command will display an error message).


After restarting Windows, run this from Command Prompt (cmd.exe)
NETSH FIREWALL RESET
Launch firewall applet from Control Panel, and then configure your Windows Firewall settings.

If nothing helps, as a last-resort solution (before reinstalling Windows XP Service Pack 2), give these two commands a try. Click Start, Run and type:

rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection Ndi-Steelhead 132 %windir%\inf\netrass.inf
Restart Windows, and then run this command (from Command Prompt):
NETSH FIREWALL RESET

Attempt to start Firewall applet. Start the Windows Firewall service if prompted.
