I got a 300GB Maxtor DIamond something with a 16MB buffer for $112 after shipping. Then I found way better deals after looking for another 30 seconds.

fIREwire can really only out perform on the MAC.. PC's arent as big as a difference and do carry it fast but its so hard to notice since its measured in megabytes and if your transforming big amounts of data continously, you may see a bigger result.

external drives seem like a great idea
that is, until you actually use them and lose a few hundred GB of files

yes, because internal drives never fail and cannot lose your files ever.
Software RAID 5 with external drives will keep physical problems from damaging data, though you are still fuxored if a virus gets your system or you noob it up and format the wrong volume.

You missed the point.. The USB EXTERNAL Housing.. And then a INTERNAL drive that goes into it.

I think notbob and lehk was refering to buying a standard external drive rather then an internal with a housing on it.

I haul mine around all the time, even today
Try carrying 400 DVDs in cases, 2 of these removable enclosures and cabling, power
a cake of blank DVDs, and an overstuffed laptop case.
I look like a techie homeless guy.

my point was that the externals have shitty power supplies, crappy chipsets, crappy fans, run hotter and generally wreck hard drives faster than your computer can
not to mention spotty driver support and no customer service if you do have a problem (and using a hdd case can void your warrantee)

Wow, who has that policy!?!?!
There are a lot of shitty enclosures out there, thats why I always do some research before buying.

notbob is spot on, just wasnt clear earlier
I made the same exact arguement to someone over the weekend, as to why they should order to VS3 from neweeg, as apposed to just driving to Frys or Compusa. The hotter the drive runs the more likely it is to fail. (sooner)
