LOS ANGELES--In Memphis, Tenn., a small medical supply company called Luminetx has developed a new method of palm-reading that it hopes will rival fingerprinting or retinal scans as a way to perfectly identify individuals.
The technology is based on an infrared scan of the blood cells running through veins, which is then analyzed by a computer.

Luminetx originally developed the technique as a way to help doctors and nurses find veins in patients needing injections. But now, through a new division called Snowflake Technologies, the company is marketing it to banks, credit card companies and even homeland-security officials as a high-tech biometric identification tool.
"Our vein structures are completely different, especially when you look at the palm," said Luminetx Chief Executive Officer Jim Phillips, speaking at The Entertainment Gathering conference here Wednesday. "In a way, it's like looking at a bar code. We convert your veins to a bar code."
The drive for technology that can uniquely identify individuals has been given new urgency by the ongoing threat of terrorist attacks and the growing incidence of identity theft.

I don't want my veins to be some bar code.

A manly fugitive would mangle his own veins to avoid being identified.

My veins are already my barcade, am I the only one that scans in and out of work each day? Besides multiple badges on a retractible thingy, i hand scan to access the areas I need to go, in a booth, that sniffs and weighs and says things I cant understand.

Get over yourself. It is a perfectly reasonable security method. In all reality it appears to be very secure too. Probably stronger than retinal and hand scanning. I'm thinking it would be hard to fake veins.

I kinda do the same thing... I have a badge, only one, because my badge rules all the other badge degrees at my work. I only need to go through an employee line medal detector, OR a door that my badge lets me through. I work at an airport. I DO however have to fingerscan to punch in.

ok well first it's scanning for barcode, next it is implanted chips, then it is radiowave mind control

lol well don't you think technology and all this "tracking" technology is really just going to be the Gov's way to blind people with protection?
Sure the pelgilum swings both ways but it takes hundreds of years to swing back and right now, this country might just be swinging to far.
I would not want to be SCANNED like a can of soup just to enter my own home, car, or even a store!

I see this as a potentially strong security method. You could make something very hard to break into if the key is matched to your veins.

Quite frankly this system is needed for securing your identity and money. All identity theft could be prevented with this system. If you add it to mastercards you could prevent fraud in those departments as well. Only problem when someone mugs you it will cost you an arm and a leg.

I understand that people would want this for protection against fraud but don't you think it would be abused and led to the point where we have to be scanned everywhere and all we do is logged...what's next sonething like Minority Report (I think some one said this before). Yes, it has been a great innovation by science, but why can't we go back to the time where people actually TRUSTED eachother and didn't think everyone was a criminal...

One simple reason. People are not trustworthy.

If you really look at it most people are good decent people. The problem is if you have one person out of 1000 who turns out bad then those 1000 people will probably be robbed. It takes very little time to rob alot from a person so criminals can infest large areas with their small population.

I'm not worried about identity theft because i make sure to tear up important documents. The only thing there is to worry about is the large data collection agencies leaking out your info and congress could do something about that if they wanted by holding them accountable. And as long as I don't walk around all weak and timid looking and am aware of my surroundings i'm not worried about being robbed. All this complex technology can be easily defeated if mofos learned anything from 9-11. But then again 9-11 is used more as a political tool than something to learn from. Vein proofed debit card: Simple. Hold your wife and kids in the minivan with a gun to their head until you come back with the cash. And you better stay calm just incase the machine measure stress and blood pressure. But then I guess the smart mofos will come up with some expensive technology for that.
A lock and a key will suffice. As long as the government doesn't force it down my throat the people who "need more protection" can have it.

INstead of cutting out an EYE to get past retinal scans, or a finger to get past fingerprint identification areas.. They will now cut off your arm, and then throw the arm to the side when they bypass the system.

Penguins are cute and very pleasing on the eyes. Swinging penguins is a different story, they try to have sex with multiple couples.
