View Full Version : Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Available

Only heard about this a few days ago so yesterday I got up and installed it. The WGA protection is the same as in Beta 1 but an easy solution is available by just replacing the iecustom.dll file in the archive. New features like the tabbed browsing and RSS feeds were expected but work well with the new Vista look interface. No errors or bugs so far but that's just after a day or so. Some of the handy new features included are multiple homepages, zoom feature (up to 1000%), quick tabs which allow thumbnail views of all open pages and the new phishing filter which seems to work ok if you look for the nasty sites. All in all it's working well but don't let me be the judge of it, try it for yourselves.

The most noticeable thing about IE7 beta is the lack of a traditional navigation bar. Both IE6 and Firefox use the upper left corner, where most Westerners first look when reading a book or Web page, for Back, Forward, Home, Refresh, and Stop buttons. IE7 breaks the mold, and that takes some getting used to. The Back and Forward buttons are still in the upper left corner, but the Stop and Refresh buttons are now in the upper right, and Home is two rows down on the right.

In fact, once you get down to the second row, it's a whole new ball game. Here you'll find a star-emblazoned button labeled Favorites Center. Clicking on it opens a side window with three tabs, one each for displaying your favorites, your current RSS feeds, and your history. Next to this is the add/subscribe button for adding RSS feeds. The RSS reader is functional if unexceptional, but because the vast majority of Internet surfers use IE, even without a lot of the bells and whistles of more advanced readers, IE7 could be a catalyst for widespread RSS adoption. And adding RSS feeds from your favorite site is simple—just two clicks.

Yeah it's a little annoying with them so scattered and smaller but I've only thrown my drink across the room twice in anger about it so it's cool.

Not having to use ad-aware or spyblaster since switing to firefox is a blessing. Having to use IE is like having to use two more apps to fully take away the crap IE leaves in your pc while surfing.

"Evaluation of Internet Explorer 7 should start now, but the software should not be used on production systems in mission-critical environments. Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview will only run on Windows® XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) systems, but will ultimately be available for Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, and Windows Server 2003."

Its way better than than the first Beta, downloaded it a few days ago, OINK's had it up since the 21st apparently, but its way less "buggy" than the first..........kinda sad it takes a company witha ll their resources to inch along in the browser arena when Moxilla makes leaps and bounds in a tenth of the time...............

I cant be bothered with microsofts browser. Il stick to firefox, since ive switched had no problems what so ever and will continue to support it. Microsoft just isnt worth it anymore even if their product is good its a little too late.

shit, I reformat my hard drive last night, and never to go back on that crappy browser!

it looks like they're trying to catch up with Firefox..... They're on the right path, but far behind Firefox. Beside the Tabbed Browsing, nothing ells has changed on IE....

There is a few nice features like the feeds, tabbed browsing, zoom and the phishing filter but I just can't help wonder about the filesize.

Why all the MB's and not much to show for? I've been using it for a couple of days and I like it a lot.

Oh, Cydor, I recently had to reinstall the latest version of MS Antispyware because it went out of date.

I've been using it for a couple of days and I like it a lot.
God fucking help me I do too...nothing weird like getting shit deleted or disabled.

Just some weird errors when I close the browser.
Other than that I can't help but like it and I think that it will not be all that bad if they don't fuck it up between now and release.

I also like the feeds button...I like the insta click RSS subscription setup and the zoom features.
The phishing set-up is cool too and I am interested in seeing where they take it.
I have noticed (well just me anyways) that it also loads faster than version 6.

As for the file size.....jesus christ guys thats SMALL
I am not sure if any of you remember when Netscape was half that size and it was still on top.
I remember when Netscape and I.E reached 11MB and I could not help but think....what a bloated pieice of shit....that was when Nutscrape 4 came out and it became Communicator.

God I miss the old GOOD Netscape......(Navigator and not when it became communicator)

I decided to give it a try. Seems to be working pretty well. I like the simplicity of it along with the tabbed browsing. Still getting used to it but seems to be a mainstay.

I use Maxthon mainly for browsing, I'm wondering if IE7 will break Maxthon (maxthon is based off the IE core, and is more of an advanced shell than a standalone browser). If somebody uses a similar browser, have you had problems?

I personally haven't tried it, and you'll probably need a restore point, but I just recieved a newsletter from cNet that you can remove IE7, just go to add/remove programs. So if you're interested in trying it, then try it.

Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 includes advancements in security and browsing experience for end users, functionality and compatibility for developers, and manageability for corporate network administrators. Beta 2 is intended to enable developers, web developers and IT pros to begin to test the new browser for compatibility with their applications and websites. Internet Explorer 7 provides improved navigation through tabbed browsing, web search right from the toolbar, advanced printing, easy discovery, reading and subscription to RSS feeds, and much more. IE7 also provides security through a robust new architecture, security features that help defend against malicious software, and new ways to better protect against the theft of personal data from fraudulent websites. It has improved support for cascading style sheets, a rich RSS feeds platform, and robust tools for deploying and managing Internet Explorer 7 in large enterprise environments.

Haha, where did you download IE7 from? Obviously not a trusted source (unless you had spyware from something else).

IE7 is made by microsoft. If you got a legit version of it, it did NOT steal cred card info, it did NOT plant messages, and it did NOT keylog you. Something else did.

IE 7 will no longer require WGA validation

Internet Explorer 7 will be made available to all users on the Windows platform – even if it is pirated, according to Microsoft. The installation will no longer require that a system is first validated through Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA).

Program manager Steve Reynolds, told eWEEK:

Microsoft takes its commitment to help protect the entire Windows ecosystem seriously, and we’re taking a step to help make consumers safer online. We feel the security enhancements to Internet Explorer 7 are significant enough that it should be available as broadly as possible, and this means making it available to all users of IE 7-compatible Windows operating systems.

The company explained that this move stems from the fact that a single user not using the security enhancements provided in IE 7 is sufficient to put the entire network at risk.

I find it quite interesting that Paul Mah asked the question;
"Do you think Microsoft is simply trying to garner more users to its Internet Explorer browser?"

Yes, I do.
IE7...bah.
I've both installed and removed it twice, in a like number of days.

What concerns me (and really, since I don't use it, it's issues do not affect me), is that if I were using it, it is not compatible with one of the courses I am enrolled in. Anyone paying upwards of seventy dollars for the software required, needs to have IE6 installed, in order to run it.

Luckily, I already use IE6 (hunted it down the day it "updated" itself to v7).
Some of my classmates were not so lucky...nor were/are they apt in the ways of Google (or installing). I saw one girl in tears.
Being the loving. kind, tender being I am (LOL!), I showed her where to find it, then ended up installing it for her as well.
I really dislike seeing a woman cry.

I think recall a similar situation with a member here taking classes. She should be using IE6 or possibly FF. Not for everyone, I guess. They won't let us use it at work either due to incompatibility issues.

IE still has yet to pass the ACID 2 test for browsers, and as far as being standards compliant, Microsoft has a nasty habit of ignoring everyone else's opinion and doing what they want instead, as is shown by the spotty CSS support.

Yes they managed to fix the hacks that were used in IE6 to circumvent many of the bugs in web pages, however they still haven't fixed why those hacks were made in the first place, and as far as being development friendly, no dev in their right mind will look at IE without shuddering.

However we are FORCED to make sure pages are compatible in IE because over 60% of users are on it, we can't exactly ignore a demographic of that size, but after firing all of the IE staff when they pinnacled with IE6 and left Netscape in the dust they drag them all back trying to get them to work on it again, no wonder it's a slipshod piece of software that can only borrow abilities from FF and other, more capable browsers.

As for Maxthon, you have to be kidding, it uses the windows IE rendering engine, it's like saying "I don't want that pancake because it's round, I want an oval pancake!" it's got the same problems handing web page rendering as IE 7.
