Stupid question but can you use Ultrium tapes or SDLT/ Super DLT tapes to use in file sharing? I mean they're IBM formatted so it shouldn't be a problem. I know they're designed for archival purposes but it's just a thought. Any help greatfully appreciated. :)

Tape drives are still used to do large backups...nothign wrong with that.
Just might be better/easier to swap hard drives though.

The blindingly obvious answer is that you can exchange files on ultrium tapes provided that the person you want to exchange with has a $1500 tape drive.

It seems you aren't 100% clear on what a tape drive is.

yes, the whole point of LTO (as opposed to DLT) was to provide an open and tested compatable format. the hard part is finding other people with tapse as well and tape drives. for filesharing purposes a hard drive in an enclosure or a regular external hard drive would be better since files can be opened while they are on the disk.
Tapes are really meant for Bulk storage and bulk transport.

I dont know how well they would work for filesharing but for backups they were highly unreliable. It was almost impossible to get a 100% flawless backup.

If your computer reads the tape drive like any other hard drive, and you have a file sharing program installed, yes you sure can use it.
Just like you can use a USB flash drive or a CD-ROM even if you want...
